Two options (HYP0THESES)-

1. pebbles are used to grind seeds or
2. pebbles are used to strengthen tunnels

WE NEED INFORMATION THAT HELPS US CHOOSE BETWEEN THE TWO.

A-Supports the grinding option but not that strong.
B-Eliminate. Irrelevant to what we are talking about.
C-Strong. Distinguishes between the two hypothesis. keep this.
D.Eliminate. Not relevant.
E- DIRECTLY DISTINGUISHES BETWEEN THE TWO HYPOTHESIS. Correct.

Observation of the study- A species of harvester ants bring pebbles into their nest

There are two possible reasons offered for why they do so with one evidence for each-

1. To process seeds that they can not process- Evidence is that they consume seeds and there are some hard seeds in their habitat that they can not process and need pebbles to do that

2. To build stronger walls- Evidence is the habitat colony is in loose sandy soil that can make the wall weaker

Question stem- Any information that can either strengthen or weaken the logical chain for one of the hypothesis

Analyzing answer choices-

A- Even if they show greater surface wear, we don't know whether its due to grinding or reinforcing the wall- so no one evidence gets strengthens - eliminate

B- There is another species that use pebbles for walls and live in habitats where hard shelled seeds are major source of local food- these ants may be strong enough to process these seeds - this is not enough to deterministically weaken or strengthen any specific evidence- Eliminate

C- This information also requires an assumption that can not be made from the question stem- that there is a correlation between where they keep the pebbles and how they use it- Incorrect

D. Requires an assumption that these ants would prefer to eat more nutrient dense seeds and hence consume hard seeds for which they need pebbles- out of scope- incorrect

E. Correct- If other colonies of these same species nest in stable soil, that means they may not need pebbles (evidence weakened for the second hypothesis). But if they still carry pebbles, then it could be for the first hypothesis. And if they don't, then it's the second hypothesis that is true.

Option E is correct as of the two hypothesis of usage of pebbles we can see that if tha similar ants in a stable habitat actually carry pebbles inside then they might be using it for grinding food.
a) The greater wear could be because of shielding the interior or grinding the food.
b) Similar ants in the similar habitat might not result in fruitful conclusion. And although majority of the supply but the ants can look at the other ones as a food option as well.
c and d are also irrelevant details to focus on.

Harvester ants carry small pebbles from soil surface to nest interior. 2 Hypothesis = they are using it to crack hard seeds they cant crack themselves as their mandibles are weak or they are using it to make reinforce walls of nest's tunnels which are prone to collapse because of loose sandy soil.

If we were to decide bw the 2 hypothesis, what is the most useful info to know.

A = Whether pebbles recovered from nest's interior show greater surface wear than pebbles of similar composition collected from area surrounding the habitat. The wear on the pebbles on nest's interior could be because of wear and tear from grinding the seeds or from tunnel wall reinforcement = Wrong;

B = Whether other harvester ant species that collect pebbles for structural reinforcement inhabit areas with hard seeds making up a large supply of food supply = The answer to this wont help me choose which hypothesis is more likely. Wrong

C = Whether pebbles are deposited in brood rearing chambers rather than granaries or along load bearing sections of the tunnel = brood rearing chambers is not in scope, if they were doing this, i wont know which hypothesis b/w the 2 we are concerned with is more likely. wrong

D = Nutritional value not discussed nor important - wrong.

E = Whether colonies of this species that reside in compact stable soil nests also carry pebbles into nest. = If they dont, the stone was used for reinforcement, if they do - for grinding. Perfect. This is the answer.

i am going with option a.
if pebbles are used as grinding tools to process hard water they must show surface wear so knowing about it will help the most.
b incorrect as behaviour doesn't necessarily explain
c incorrect as location alone doesn't clarify the function
d incorrect as nutrient content doesn't explain either
e incorrect as this is somewhat weakening

Ans- Option E

To help decide b/w two hypotheses, we can try and think of making the options as true and false. If we get an answer which helps decide the hypotheses by this method, that option is the answer.

If we consider option E as correct, then the hypotheses that ants use pebbles to crack seeds is establised. If we consider option as false, then structural reinforcement hypotheses can be established.

There are two hypotheses here:
1. Grinding
2. Structural

To answer GMAT question types like these, you should aim to find an answer which would support one hypothesis if yes and other hypothesis if no.

Answer is E:
If yes, then supports grinding hypothesis.
If no, then supports structural reinforcement.

A is tempting due to the surface wear. But rememeber surface wear could come from other factors like transportation or movement within the nest.
B - Irrelevant as talks about other species.
C - This is a dead no, because it introduces a third option which the question does not discuss. So eliminate
D - Irrelevant doesnt talk about seed nutritional value

A-rocks are hard they might not show wear on the surface making it negative.
B- Knowing about other species behaviour does not definitively tell us why this specific species behaves like this in the unique environment.
C-while the location of pebbles helps, load-bearing vs granaries is less definitive than removing the structural need entirely.
D-This speaks to why they want to seed but not how they use the pebbles to get them.
E- Makes sense because the question tests the fundamentals environmental requirements

Really impressed by the question, the stimulus is very easy to understand if you focus on word ALTERNATIVELY
So only one hypotheses is possible and both cannot exist together.

If we read the question stem carefully then it says - what would be useful to decide which hypotheses shall be chosen between the two.
NOW we could definitely anticipate that the TRAP option would give us statements that makes both the hypotheses exist together

A) It would not give us an idea even if the surface of pebbles would show greater surface wear as the pebbles could wear it surface off in both the process of nesting and using it as a grinding tool
B) This option too would give us implication that both the hypotheses could exist together
C) The comparison is not appropriate the latter one clearly says - granaries(used as grinding tool for processing hard seeds) and load-bearing sections(reinforcing the walls), so both hypotheses may exist together
D) this is clearly an outlier - it could also make both the hypotheses coexist together
E) As told in the stimulus - pebbles used to reinforce walls of nest tunnels that are prone to collapse due to loose sand - so if the same species of ants, which lives in a habitat where collapsing of tunnel is NOT a concern - then taking these pebbles to their interiors would only have one function that it using these pebbles are grinding tool. So it clearly rules out the reinforcement hypotheses. CORRECT

A- if evidence shows wear that means must be used for grinding as against the surrounding pebbles. hold for now
B- This does not resolve the purpose for which it carried.
C- It is confusing since if in tunnels means for reinforcement and if in granaries- means grinding... Hold on for now
D- It can be also reason but we can't decisively say it is used for the same as soft shell seeds can also serve purpose of nutrition why to work hard. I am rejecting this on this basis

E- This is also interesting for me if yes- then grinding and if no- then for reinforcement. Hold on now

A/C/E is my choice as of now. but only A shows direct evidence.. all are guess work.. I will choose A

Sinec the Q stem asks to help decide between the 2 hypothesis, my ans choices should be such which evaluates among the two hypothesis

A= talks about one hypothesis, not the other . So out
B= nothing about other harvester ant species, out of scope
C=yes this evaluates correctly between 2 hypothesis
D= nutrients between hard & soft shell is not in scope
E=this again talks about only 1 hypothesis, so out.

My answer is C) but correct answer is E.)
In This question we need to decide between two hypothesis
A) Wear and tear of pebbles can be due to many reasons- Contender. C is a better choice.
B) This says that some other species may use the pebbles for both the purposes- does not help to decide- Eliminate
C) The placement of pebbles in granaries or load bearing sections can help to decide their purpose of use.
Here I misinterpreted the choice, brood- rearing chambers are places where breeding takes place hence it presence of pebbles specifically in this area does not tell anything- Eliminate
D) More nutrition at the cost of not being able to break the shell can be ignored as long as they get some nutrition- Eliminate
E) If pebbles are transported even when structure is not weak, it can be used for any purpose but not structure- weakening a hypothesis. On the other hand if answer is no then it directly strengthens this hypothesis that it is required for structure.

The question mentions 2 possible uses of the pebbles collected by the ants.
i. They use them to crush seeds to make them consumable BECAUSE THEY DON'T HAVE MANDIBLES TO DO THAT
ii. They use them to support their nest BECAUSE THE SOIL IS LOOSE

Answer choice analysis
A. The wear pattern comparison between internal and external pebbles will not help because it is possible that ants might prefer worn out pebbles. It still doesn't tell me what they use it for ONCE THEY GET IT IN THE NEST

A very interesting question that had me scratching my head!

Let's look at the options:
A) If pebbles recovered from nest interior show more wear than the ones found in surrounding habitat, chances are high that the ants are using them to grind hard nuts. So a likely option, let's hold onto this.

B) If other ants that are KNOWN to use pebbles for structural reinforcement are living in areas where hard-shelled nuts are the primary source of food, then it is possible that they are using the pebbles for both purposes. Do not fall for this trap. The question has clearly asked us that in order to decide 'between the two hypothesis' so we should find an argument that clearly supports over over the other. Invalid option

C) If majority pebbles are deposited in brood-rearing section, and not granaries or along load bearing sections, it means that the pebbles are being used for a different purpose altogether. Again, the question has clearly asked to choose an argument that helps decide 'between the two hypothesis' and not introduce a third one. Invalid option.

D) Even if the hard shelled nuts have more nutrients, it does not help identify why are they taking the pebbles. Look at it this way: If hard shelled nuts had more nutrients, they would be tempted to take them and use pebbles to crack them, but its equally likely that they have less nutrients yet they are just available more abundantly so the ants have to crack them. Also note that this makes the argument purely about one hypothesis: the hard shelled seeds and does not factor in the reinforcement at all. Due to these factors, this option does not hold up.

E) This is interesting indeed. If there is low risk of tunnel collapsing, and yet the ants transport pebbles, it can be to crack hard seeds, BUT it can also be for a variety of other reasons. Like brood rearing, playing a football match (I am joking), or on a serious note, they can be taking them to reinforce the parts that exhibit weakness. The statement is enticing, but still leaves a lot of loose ends.

We re-look at (A) If the pebbles show higher wear on the 'surface', means the ants are grinding them against something. The biggest suspect in this are the hard shelled seeds for it would mean food for them.

Hence, the answer is (A)

We have to choose an answer which could strengthen one hypothesis and weaken another

Two hypothesis -
1: Pebbles used for grinding
2: Pebbles used to reinforce the walls

(A) This talks about surface wear. This can strengthen hypothesis 2 but it wont weaken hypothese 1 cause even the grinding could create wear and tear.
(B) Other harvester species are out of scope. If this statement is true this would not tell anything about the current harvester species the biologists are studying.
(C) Where the pebbles are deposited again wont tell us much because pebbles could also be moved around. Its not mentioned that pebbles once deposited in place A cannot be moved. If they are deposited in graneries it could mean that they are used for grinding. But again such pebbles could also be used for structural support in a different place.
(D) This just tells you why the ants would prefer hard shelled seeds vs soft shelled seeds. Irrelevant to the argument.
(E) Correct: This says that the soil is STABLE meaning the ants dont need as much structural support using pebbles. Now even if in this case the pebbles are being deposited into the nest then there is a high probabilty that Hypothese 1 is strengthened.
