B

Which of the following, if true, most strengthens the argument?
A. Proceeds from the sale of the book are not expected to exceed the cost of its publication. => not meaningful
B. For numerous types of products, there are many brands that use recycled materials, although their manufacturers and distributors do nothing to advertise those brands’ recycled content. => Book with add. value to the community by promoting the products using recycled products, which is in the interest of the Calovian residents (comp. w/ sentence 1)
C. For many materials, such as plastics, the recycling process results in a lower grade of material with a correspondingly different range of uses. => not meaningful
D. For many types of products listed in the book, all the brands available in Calovia use recycled materials.=> there would be no value add if all brands use recycled materials, it would even weaken the argument
E. Many manufacturers of products that contain recycled materials vary the proportion of recycled materials in those products in response to changes in price and availability. => not meaningful

A. "Cost" is irrelavant
B. shows how the new book will help customers to know about the products they purchase - Correct
C. Since the residents of Colovia are committed to using products containing recycled material, lower grade of material/quality of the
product is irrelavant
D. The question is whether the new book will help "increase" in the use of products containing recycled material. If a particular
product uses recycled material for all brands, there is no question of increase-in-use-of-products-with-recycled-material
E. price and availability - irrelavant

IMO: B

Answer is B. --> I was between B and D though - D is eliminated because if all brands in this country were recyclable, then why would they be making the book in the first place; people wouldn't need help recycling goods.

Answer is B.
B. For numerous types of products, there are many brands that use recycled materials, although their manufacturers and distributors do nothing to advertise those brands’ recycled content. ---->This shows that people might not be aware of the products that use recycled material. The booklet will, surely, increase the use of products containing recycled materials

The conclusion is: publication of the book will almost certainly increase the use of products containing recycled materials in Calovia.

Argument says that residents want to use products containing recycled materials.

Now, B says that there are many brands that use recycled materials, although their manufacturers and distributors do nothing to advertise those brands’ recycled content.

So, that being the case,

Book with listing of products using recycled material will come out -> Residents will get to know even about the brands that use recycled materials, although their manufacturers & distributors were doing nothing to advertise those brands’ recycled content -> Residents will prefer those materials (since argument mentions that residents want to use products containing recycled materials).

D actually does weaken the argument. D says: For many types of products listed in the book, all the brands available in Calovia use recycled materials.

Let's take a product: Pencil. So, according to D, all the brands available for pencil use recycled materials.

If that's the case, then the book really will not in any way, increase/decrease the use of "pencil" product category containing recycled materials, since people were already buying products with recycled material in the "pencil" product category, even before the publication of the book.

I think D is irrelevant. Please correct me if I am wrong

Quote:
D. For many types of products listed in the book, all the brands available in Calovia use recycled materials.

Reasons:
1. Whatever the content of book is irrelevant of our conclusion. Even if it has mix of recycled and non-recycled brands, it doesn't matter how it would add value to the sales.
2. We don't know how the book would help. Maybe citizens already know about recycled and non-recycled products from other resources.

Please suggest. EducationAisle

Thanks!

Basically the whole point is that D does not strengthen the argument. For many types of products listed in the book (let's say pencil), since all the brands available in Calovia use recycled materials, the book itself will not increase/decrease the use of products containing recycled materials in Calovia.

Argument Analysis:
Publication of the book will almost certainly INCREASE the use of products containing recycled materials

    Answer Choice →
Proceeds from the sale of the book are not expected to exceed the cost of its publication.
Doesn’t matter, this is out of scope

For numerous types of products, there are many brands that use recycled materials, although their manufacturers and distributors do nothing to advertise those brands' recycled content.
        Maybe?

For many materials, such as plastics, the recycling process results in a lower grade of material with a correspondingly different range of uses.
          Doesn’t matter

The lower grade of material with difference range of uses do not have an impact an increasing the products containing the recycle materials
For many types of products listed in the book, all the brands available in Calovia use recycled materials.
If all the brands available in Calovia uses recycled materials, then it is not really necessary for the government to be publishing the book to educate the residents of Calovia? This is a weakener

Many manufacturers of products that contain recycled materials vary the proportion of recycled materials in those products in response to changes in price and availability.
              This is out of scope

By process of elimination, Answer choice B is the best
              Answer choice B

Lets's say there are 5 brands and 10 products. Option D says -> off all 10 products mentioned. all 5 brands sell recycled products. What if 4 brands sell recycled and 1 doesn't, then in that case book doesn't give more info to get a conclusion.

Option D goes ahead and clears that and says all brands sell recycled products, so that way it strengthens right?

But option B - Says manufacturers and distributors do nothing to advertise those brands’ recycled content. How does this strengthen our conclusion that "Book is helping to persuade customers to buy recycled products"?

Though my reason for option D is not so accurate, not sure why option B is correct. (since it's not attacking the conclusion)

Also, requesting to please elaborate more on option D and why it is incorrect.

Please let me know if I'm missing something.

The author concludes that "the publication of the book will certainly INCREASE the use of products containing recycled materials in Calovia."

In other words, the author is arguing that the current use of recycled products is lower than the future use of such products will be once the book is published.

              (D) tells us that, for many products, the only options are recycled. So even though consumers don't yet have the handy book, they must already be using recycled products because ALL of the options are recycled. If that's the case, then the current use of recycled products is the same as the future use of such products. So, (D) actually weakens the argument that these use of these products will increase.

              (D) is out.

              Here's (B):
              Quote:
              B. For numerous types of products, there are many brands that use recycled materials, although their manufacturers and distributors do nothing to advertise those brands’ recycled content.
We know from the passage that many residents of Calovia want to buy recycled products. (B) tells us that manufacturers/distributors aren't informing people whether their products are recycled or not. So even if people really want to buy recycled stuff, they might not know which products to buy.

That's why the book would increase the sales of such products -- by informing people about which products are recycled, sales of those products will likely increase.

              (B) is the correct answer.

As a side note: it's dangerous to paraphrase the author's words. The conclusion is not that the "book is helping to persuade customers to buy recycled products" -- the conclusion is that "publication of the book will almost certainly increase the use of products containing recycled materials in Calovia." People are already committed to buying these products; they don't necessarily need to be persuaded.

              I hope that helps!
