Five percent of a certain grass seed is timothy. If the amount of the mixture needed to plant one acre contains 2 pounds of timothy, how many acres can be planted with 240 pounds of the seed mixture?

A. 6
B. 12
C. 20
D. 24
E. 120

Answer: A
Explanation: Let's suppose Grass Seed=G, and Timothy=T.
And, we know that 5 percent of G is T (or T is 5 percent of G)
--> \(T= \frac{5}{100} * G =\frac{1}{20} * G = \frac{G}{20}\), and \(G= 240\), so --> \(T = \frac{240}{20} = 12\) pounds.

We need \(2\) pounds of T for \(1\) Acre
==> \(1\) pound of T for \(\frac{1}{2}\) Acres
==> \(12\) pounds of T for \(12*1/2\) Acre --> \(6\) Acres (Answer)
So, we can plant 6 Acres with 240 pounds of seed mixture (in other words with 12 pounds of Timothy).
Hence, answer is A.

Please! do post OA (if possible).

Timothy - 5; Total Grass seed - 100; which is same as Timothy - 1; Total Grass seed - 20;

For 1 acre; Timothy - 2; so Total Grass seed - 40 (From above)
For ? acre; Total Grass seed - 240
Since 240 is 6*40, we can plant 1*6 acres.
Answer (A).

2 pounds ............5%
x pounds..............100%

x = 40 pounds for one acre thus acres = 240/40 = 6

We have 240 pounds of the seed mixture, and 5% of the mixture is timothy.
So: TOTAL weight of timothy = 5% of 240 pounds
= 12 pounds

So, we there are 12 pounds of timothy in the mixture, and 2 pounds of timothy is needed for 1 acre
This means 4 pounds of timothy is needed for 2 acres
And 6 pounds of timothy is needed for 3 acres
And 12 pounds of timothy is needed for 6 acres

5% of the total seed mixture n contains 2 pounds of timothy, so we have:

0.05n = 2

n = 2/0.05 = 200/5 = 40 pounds of mixture

We can create a proportion in which a = the number of acres that can be planted with 240 pounds of the seed mixture:

40/1 = 240/a

40a = 240

a = 6

Alternate Solution:

We note that there are 240 x 5% = 240 x 0.05 = 12 pounds of timothy in 240 pounds of seed mixture. Since one acre needs to contain 2 pounds of timothy, we can plant 12/2 = 6 acres with 240 pounds of seed mixture.

Given 240 pounds of seed mixtures

5 % 240 = 12 pounds of timothy is in 240 pounds of grass

2 pounds of timothy is enough for one acre, hence 12 pounds of timothy is enough for 6 acres

original mix is X pounds and 2 pounds of it is 5%; So the mix is 40 pounds in total;
now if we divide 240/40 we get 6 acres

Is my approach is wrong?

240x5/100=12 (as 240 pounds will have 5% timothy)
1 Acre = 2 pounds of timothy so, 12/2 = 6 Acres

My strategy:

1. It is obvious that the 25p bag is the least expensive per pound option. So customer will unquestionably buy the first 50 bags, by buying 25p + 25p ...

2. Now what is the least expensive option for the customer (knowing that he must buy at least 65 p) 2 possible options:
i. he buys a bag of 10 pounds + a bag of 5 pounds
ii. he buys one more bag of 25 pounds
comparing the price of 10p + 5p vs 25p bag we see that it is less expensive to use strategy ii

so the customer will buy 3 bags of 25 pounds. 32.25 per bag. No need to compute we know that answer must end with .75 => answer B

We are told:
  • 5% of the seed mixture is timothy.
  • It takes 2 pounds of timothy to plant 1 acre.
  • We have 240 pounds of the total seed mixture.
  • We need to find how many acres can be planted with this mixture.

Since 5% of the mix is timothy:

\(Timothy= 5 percent of 240 = 0.05 * 240=12 pounds\)

Each acre requires 2 pounds of timothy

Therefore,

Acres= 12 pounds of timothy / 2 pounds per acre = 6 acres
