A certain car can travel 40 minutes on a gallon of gasoline at 60 miles per hour. If the car had started with a full tank and had 8 gallons of gasoline left in its tank at the end, then what percent of the tank was used to travel 80 miles at 60 mph?

A. 15%
B. 20%
C. 25%
D. 30%
E. 40%

Kudos for a correct solution.

Hi,
Not a very well worded Q as we have to assume things not stated in the question.
We have not been told that the car travelled only this stretch of 80 miles meaning the veh started at that speed and stopped at that speed and nothing else was travelled..

Speed of the car=60 miles per hours i.e 1 mile per minute
Therefore, to travel 80 miles the car takes 80 minutes @60 miles per hour
Also, since it runs for 40 minutes on 1 gallon, it will take 2 gallons to run for 80 minutes
Fuel left=8 gallons
Consumed=2 gallons
% of tank used=2/10=20%
Answer B

800score Official Solution:

(B) 60 miles per hour is a mile a minute. 80 miles at 60 miles per hour will take 80 minutes. Since 40 minutes is 1 gallon, 80 minutes will be 2 gallons. The full tank holds 2 + 8 = 10 gallons. 2 gal/10 gal = 2/10, which is 20%.

The correct answer is choice (B).

40 miles req 1 gallon of oil
therefore, 80 miles will require 2 gallons of oil.

8 gallons oil is left after the ride. So total tank capacity is 2+8=10 gallons.

%oil used for travelling 80 miles at 60 m/hr = 2/10*100=20%

Correct answer is B.

at 60 mph, 40 minutes=40 miles
if 40 miles take 1 gallon,
then 80 miles take 2 gallons
2/(8+2)=.2=20%
