Amy has a 3600 square foot apartment that she wants to carpet. The carpeting company informs her that it will cost $200 as a starting fee, with $30 added per square yard. How much will it cost to carpet her entire apartment?
Note: 1 yard = 3 feet.

$30 added per square yard, means that we have to convert the area in yards

3 feet = 1 yard,
But before you rush to answer the question,  check the units 
3600 = 400 yard

1 yard = $ 30 
400 yard = 12000

Add the initial fee to get 12000 + 200

I think the most tricky aspect here is the conversion from feet to yard.

While we are given the factor 3 feet = 1 yard, we have to notice that we are dealing with square yards/square feet and therefore our new conversion factor is acutally:

9 feet = 1 Square yard.

this is a nice question and i got it wrong in my first take. given: 1 yard = 3 feet also 1 feet = 1/3 yard total area = 3600 ft^2 ---> convert to yards 3600 * 1/3 * 1/3 = 400 yard^2 total fee = 200 + (400 * 30) = 12200 Hence A. Please give 1 kudos

I took a rather simpler approach - since you know the area - just assume ANY dimensions, could be 120*30 or 60*60 or anything whose area would get you 3600 sq feet.

I assumed 60*60, which gives me sides of 60 feet each (now, since it's given 3 feet = 1 yard), without any possibility of getting confused, I know my sides to be 20 yards each now, which gives me the area (in yards) = 400 sq yards.

Now, it's a walk in the park, $200 + 400*$30 = $12200 (A)

Since 1 yard = 3 feet, then 1 square yard = 3 x 3 = 9 square feet.

Since 3600 ft^2 = 3600/9 = 400 yd^2, then the cost will be:

200 + 30 x 400 = 200 + 12000 = 12,200
