In the figure, ABC is a right triangle. What is the value of y ?

(A) 20
(B) 30
(C) 50
(D) 70
(E) 90

In Triangle ABC, x+y+20 = 180 i.e. x+y = 160

Angle ABD = 180 - (20+y) = 160-y = x (we already know that 160-y=x)

i.e. x < y ( as can be seen at point B)

i.e. y = 90 and x = 70 because we know that ABC is right triangle and the largest angle must be 90º

Answer: Option E

If angle ABC is given as right triangle, isn't it means angle B = 90 degree and therefore angle y = 90 degree as angle B is marked as Y degree.

Isn't it understood that B is the right angle.

No it's not understood as figure is not assumed to be drawn as per scale so there is always about which angle is 90º.

We needed to prove that x is smaller than y only then it will be safe to say that y is 90º

This one is so easy. It says ABC is a right angle triangle. y is the angle for B. The picture clearly shows that A and C are not 90 degrees. So B has to be it.
