Carl averaged 2m miles per hour on a trip that took him h hours. If Ruth made the same trip in \(\frac{2}{3}h\) hours, what was her average speed in miles per hour?

A. 1/3 mh
B. 2/3 mh
C. m
D. 3m/2
E. 3m

Quantitative Review 2020 NEW QUESTION

The distance of the trip is 2mh.

So Ruth’s average speed was:

2mh/(2h/3) = 6mh/2h = 6m/2 = 3m

Formula: Speed =\(\frac{Distance}{Time}\)

For Carl:

Speed = 2m miles/hour

Time = h hours

Distance = Speed * Time = 2m * h = 2mh miles

For Ruth:

Distance = Same as that of Carl = 2mh miles

Time = 2h/3

Speed =\(\frac{Distance}{Time}\) = \(\frac{2mh}{2h/3}\) = 3m miles/hour

The correct answer is E

Check two different methods to answer the question.

Distance = S x T

Speed and Time are inversely proportional to each other, if distance is same.

Time changed from h hours to 2/3 h hours

hence, Speed will change from 2m miles per hour to 3/2 x 2m miles per hour

= 3m

\(distance = rate * time\\
\)
If Carl's distance = \(2m * h\)

Ruth traveled that SAME distance in \(\frac{2h}{3}\) hours.

\(Distance/time = rate\)

\(2mh /\frac{2h}{3}\) = \(\frac{3}{2}(2m) = 3m\)

Answer is E.

We don't need to do any calculation if we know the relation btw speed and time for same distance.
If time taken is less for the same distance, speed is more.
If 2/3h is less than h, so speed should be more than 2m.
Only E is more than 2m

If Y travels a/b times as fast as X, then Y's travel time will be b/a of X's travel time if it is same distance

As Ruth takes 2/3rd time, her speed will be 3/2 of 2m = 6m
