The question asks about the sides which are parallel to DE amongst those 9 triangles. Which gives 5 as the answer.

A line parallel to DE will be distinct from DE.

All 9 triangles have sides parallel to DE or have side DE. Only two triangles have side DE.
All other 7 triangles have sides parallel to DE since all three bases DE, BC and the one in between them are parallel.

Thanks VeritasKarishma for the explanation! Does knowing that they are 9 identical triangle and that each angle is 60 deg help us in solving this problem? What if they weren't identical or not all angles were 60 deg?

If the triangles are not identical and all angles are not 60 degrees then ABC may not be equilateral so BC may not be parallel to DE. Also, the line in between them may not be parallel to DE either. The lines are parallel only because we know that all angles are 60 degrees.
