For the first 40 weeks, the subscription cost $1 less in 2005, for a savings of $40, and for the final 12 weeks, it cost $2 less, for a savings of $24, so the total savings in 2005 was $64.

In 2004, the cost of 1 year-long print subscription to a certain newspaper was $4 per week. In 2005, the newspaper introduced a new rate plan for 1 year-long print subscription: $3 per week for the first 40 weeks of 2005 and $2 per week for the remaining weeks of 2005. How much less did 1 year-long print subscription to this newspaper cost in 2005 than in 2004 ?

A.  $64
B.  $78
C. $112
D. $144
E. $304

PS76841.02

Answer A

There are 52 Weeks in a Year

For 2004

52 * 4 = 208

For 2005

= 3 * 40 + 2 * 12
= 120 + 24
= 144

How much less = 208 - 144 = 64

Solution:

Since there are 52 weeks in one year, the cost of the 1-year subscription in 2004 was 52 x 4 = $208.

In 2005, the cost of the 1-year subscription was 40 x 3 + (52 - 40) x 2 = 120 + 24 = $144.

The subscription cost in 2004 was 208 - 144 = $64 less than in 2005.

A year-long print subscription in 2004 was 52(4) = 208
And a year-long print subscription in 2005 was 40(3) + 12(2) = 120 + 24 = 144
So, the cost in 2005 was less than the cost in 2004 by 208 − 144 = 64

Why are we not considering the fact that 2004 was a leap year and it had 53 weeks? The answer should be 68.

A leap year has 366 days, which still is only 52 full weeks, not 53.

I agree, but 2004 specifically had 53. There's a way to know which year has 53 weeks and when I read 2004, I happened to calculate it and got 53 weeks. I assumed this to be a trick question, guess I may have overthinked.
