Solution

Given

    • Fresh watermelon contains 90% water by weight.
    • Dry watermelon contains 20% water by weight.
    • Ben buys 64 kg of fresh watermelon for 160$.

To Find

    • At what price he should sell dry watermelon to get 20% profit.

Approach and Working Out

    • Fresh watermelon –
      o 90% water and 10% solid(remaining) part.
    • Dry watermelon –
o 20% water and 80% solid (remaining) part.
    • Remaining part should remain same.
    • Let the yield of dry watermelon be x kg.
      o 10% of 64 kg = 80% of x kg
      o x = \(\frac{(80 × 10)}{64} \)kg
        = 8 kg
    • Cost of 1 kg of dry watermelon = \(\frac{160}{8}\) = 20 $.
    • To make 20% profit it must be sold at 1.2 x 20 = 24 $.

Correct Answer: Option A

64 kg for $160
1 kg for 160/64=$2.5
10% of fresh watermelon=80% of the dry watermelon
Wt of dry watermelon= 1/8*64
=8kg
when 1 kg for $2.5
8 kg= $20
For 20% profit
1.2*20

I don't think it's a sub 600 level question. A good one I would say!

Given
Watermelon. Water percentage
Fresh 90
Dry. 20

Price of fresh watermelon is 64kg =$160
Per kg fresh watermelon price =160/64
=2.5
Dry watermelon has other than water part =80%
Fresh watermelon has other than water part =10
So,
10% water part price is =2.5/10
80% water part price is =2.5*80/10
=20
For Ben cost of dry watermelon is =20
He sold on 20% profit sell price is =20*120%
=$24

Answer is A

Thanks for that, Regarding the question i think the question can be solved within a minute time. and the 600-700 take more efforts than just multiplication. But even if its a good level question, its good for us. We know we can easily solve such question within or less than the average time frame. :D
