A family has four children: a set of triplets and an older son. Five years ago, the sum of the ages of the triplets and their older brother was 122. If the brother is six years older than his siblings, then how old are the triplets today?

A. 32
B. 34
C. 35
D. 36
E. 40

Given:
1.A family has four children: a set of triplets and an older son.
2. Five years ago, the sum of the ages of the triplets and their older brother was 122.
Asked: If the brother(b years old) is six years older than his siblings (s years old), then how old are the triplets today?

The brother(b years old) is six years older than his siblings (s years old)
b = s + 6

2. Five years ago, the sum of the ages of the triplets and their older brother was 122.
3(s-5) + b-5 = 122
3s - 15 + s + 1 = 122
4s = 136
s = 34

Current age of each child of the triplet = x
Age of elder son = x+6

5 years ago:
x+x+x - 15 + x + 6 - 5 = 122
4x = 122+14
4x = 136
x = 34

Let the present age of triplets be 3x (x+x+x)
Therefore age of brother= x+6

5 years ago,

age of of triplets=3(x-5)
age of brother=x+1

It is given that

3(x-5)+x+1=122
4x-14=122
x=136/4
x=34

A. 32

C. 35
D. 36
E. 40

Let x be the age of triplets and y be the age of their brother

As per the question, 3(x-5)+(y-5)=122 and x+6=y

Solving them

x = 34 and y = 40

If the older brother was six years younger, then the children would be quadruplets all of the same age. Then their ages would sum to 116, and each child would be 116/4 = 29 years old. That was five years ago, so now the triplets are 34.
