Solution -

Considering \(h < -1 < j < 0\)
Let's take \(h = -2\) and \(j = -0.5\)

Reciprocal of \(h\) is \(\frac{1}{h }\) = \(\frac{1}{-2 }\) = \(-0.5\)

Reciprocal of \(j\) is \(\frac{1}{j }\) = \(\frac{1}{-0.5 }\) = \(-2\)

Taking reciprocals of h and j, only Option E seems to be true
\(\frac{1}{j }< -1 < \frac{1}{h}\)


Answer should be Option E

IMO E

h < -1
=> \(\frac{1}{h} > -1\)
Example: if h = -2
=> \(\frac{1}{h} = -0.5 > -1\)

since reciprocating a number does not change the sign: 1/h < 0 and 1/j < 0

-1 < j
=>\( -1 > \frac{1}{j}\)
Example: if j = -0.5
=> \(\frac{1}{j} = -2 < -1\)

=> \(\frac{1}{h} > -1 and -1 > \frac{1}{j}\)
=> \(\frac{1}{j} < -1 < \frac{1}{h}\)

Let h=-2 & j=-(1/2)

1/h = -1/2
1/j = -2

so, 1/h > -1 > 1/j

IMO Option E

can be tested by putting number
say h = -2, 1/h = -1/2
J = -1/2 1/j = -2

-2<-1< -1/2

h < -1 < j < 0
h < -1 (Divide by h on both the sides and as h is a negative number so the sign will change) and -1 < j < 0 (Divide by j on both the sides and as j is a negative number so the sign will change)
h/h > -1/h and -1/j > j/j
1 > -1/h and -1/j > 1
-1 < 1/h and 1/j < -1
1/j < -1 < 1/h

So the answer will be E

IMO option E is the answer.

since h<-1<j<0, thus, for 1/j is less than -1 and 1/h is greater than -1. Thus the answer.

Took me a bit too long. Had to pause for a second. Take a moment to think about what it's really asking.

h < −1 < j < 0

h is less than -1. So let's say it's -4 (any number less than -1 works). The reciprocal of -4 is -1/4. -1 < -1/4 < 0 ---> -1 < 1/h < 0
j is between -1 and 0 which implies that it is a negative fraction. So let's say j = -1/4. The reciprocal of -1/4 is -4 ---> -4 < -1 < 1/h < 0.

Answer is E.
