When the positive integer n is divided by 17, the remainder is 8 => \(n=17q+8\), where q is a non-negative integer
Quote:
If n=17q+8, then \(3n-4=3(17q+8)-4\)
\(=51q+24-4\)
\(=51q+20\)
\(=51q+17+3\)
\(=17(3q+1)+3\)
The question now becomes "What is the remainder when 17(q+1)+3 is divided by 17?"
17(q+1) is divisible by 17, so remainder is 3.
