Core of my solution is to use simulations equations to solve.

Let f = food and s = stationary;

f + s = 500

2% tax on food and 8% tax on stationary came to $19:

2f/100 + 8s/100 = 19

f/50 + 2s/25 = 19 (Times by 50 to get rid of the denominators)

f + 4s = 950

Set up the simulations equations:

f + 4s = 950
-
f + s = 500
------------------------
3s = 450
s = 150

Plug into original equation:

f + s = 500
f = 350

==> D

In a certain state, schools pay 2% tax on food and 8% on stationary. A school placed a combined order of $500 on food and stationary, and paid $19 on tax on the order. How much of that money was spent on food?

(A) $200
(B) $250
(C) $300
(D) $350
(E) $400
\(\frac{19}{500}*100 = 3.80\)

2___________________________8

____________3.80____________

4.20______________________1.80

Thus, amount spend on food is \(\frac{4.20}{6.00}*500 = 350\), Answer is clearlly (D)
