If p≠0, is r less than zero?

(1) pr=15
(2) p + r = 8

p \(\neq\) 0 , is r<0?

Per statement 1, pr = 15, pr = positive ---> either both p,r >0 or both p,r < 0. Not sufficient.

Per statement 2, p+r=8, not sufficient as p=20, r =-12 or p=2, r = 6 give you 2 different answers for nature of r.

Combining, we get pr=15 and p+r=8 ---> p and r must be of the same sign ---> p and r can NOT both be negative as p+r in this case will become a negative quantity. Thus, the only acceptable case here is that p and r are both >0 . Hence sufficient.

C is thus the correct answer.

Bunuel , is it necessary to mention p \(\neq\) 0 ? Statement 1 mentions that p*r = a non zero value. Thus, both p and r must be non-zero.

Hi Engr2012,

the INFO in Q stem is for both the statements ..
Statement 1 tells you that p and r are non zero..
But statement two does not say anything about p and r, except that their sum is 8..
It may not be useful in this statement too,thats immaterial...
