OFFICIAL GMAT EXPLANATION

From statement (1) it can be concluded that 15 books represent half the total number of books that Ricardo has. Alternatively, if n represents the number of books that Ricardo has, then it follows from (1) that n-15 = (1/2)n, which can be solved for n. Thus (1) alone is sufficient, and the answer must be A or D. Statement (2) alone is not sufficient, since it gives only the ratio of the number of fiction to the number of nonfiction books. Thus, the best answer is A.
