Is this a right sentence (use of a phrase with an idiom) - Hold the glass instead of hold the drink or should it be holding the drink?

As mentioned above, the exact answer can be given only after looking at the main statement..
But if one has to look at just the info provided and the context you are asking in.. whether hold the drink or holding the drink is correct..
my two cents are;-
1)
'instead of ' can take a noun after it.. say. i want to eat pizza instead of burger..
ofcourse if you are talking as perference ,then may be
rather than is better..
2) But i am yet to see the use of base form of verb after 'instead of'
so 'holding the drink' should be correct
