Hi Jon,

Thanks for the swift response. ?Appreciate it. Below are my details:

I'm 30, Indian, Male. Bachelor in Commerce from University of Delhi (3-year degree). I'm not sure how to convert my scores to GPA but I'd say they are low.

I've nearly 7 years of work experience, primarily in advertising and marketing:

1. Event Manager for a company in New Delhi, India. Regularly managed a team of 10 and at times nearly 40 people during events.(2 years - started as an executive and got promoted to manager in a year).
2. Switched careers. Copywriter with an advertising company. Got promoted to Account Manager + Community Manager + Lead copywriter 8 months later. Managed a team of 6 everyday. Handled all advertising and marketing efforts in India for one of the biggest and one of the most iconic liquor companies. Worked here for 2 years.

3. Moved to Canada as a permanent resident. Couldn't find a managerial position initially and worked in a background administrative position with the local health authority in Vancouver for a little over a year.

4. Started working as Marketing Manager for a web marketing startup in Vancouver, BC. While working there, started my own little advertising/marketing firm in Vancouver (started it in March 2015).

Unfortunately, I've been off-work for the past 5 months as my father had a stroke with resultant hemiplegia and having no one else to look after him, I moved back to India to be his primary caregiver (and I still am).

Volunteer work:
I pitch in at a local animal rescue society in Delhi, helping them with their digital marketing efforts and of course, rescuing animals.
In Vancouver, I was the group leader for a popular local meetup.com group, managing all its activities.

As for goals, I'd like to see myself working as the Brand Manager or regional marketing head for a global brand. Or return to my advertising business and expand it internationally. I believe an MBA will help me acquire the necessary skills to make the next jump up in my career.

I think I've covered the major points. If there is any other info that'd be needed to evaluate my chances, please let me know. As a side note, I should be able to achieve Canadian citizenship within the next 6-7 months.

Again, thank you Jon for taking out the time to respond on my thread. Really appreciate it.

Hey dude,
Thanks for the detail. So the short of it is that if you are ready to go next year and you're applying to schools in Europe outside of INSEAD/LBS (I would also suggest Canadian schools), with your profile I think you can go for it. Yeah, you are at a biiiit of a disadvantage being Indian with a low GMAT, but you have a pretty unique and interesting profile. And if you retake the GMAT it will delay you by a year, which given your personal situation, I understand you might not want to do.

Usually, it's not good to be unemployed when you apply, but in your case you have a strong story and reason as to why not. And I think no one will hold it against you.

I wish you the best of luck, and your dad a healthy and a quick recovery,
Best,
Jon

Hello again Jon,

Thanks for your wishes. I've my fingers crossed about my dad's recovery too.

And thanks for taking out the time to evaluate my info. You made my day :)

I'm still trying to decide whether I should go for another retake or not and also checking out the application procedures for my shortlisted schools.

I have 2 more questions please:

1. I checked with SDA Bocconi about applying with my present GMAT. I asked them if it is possible that I apply with my present GMAT score and if I attempt the GMAT again, submit the new score to be considered as part of my application later. And they said that it's not a problem. I'm yet to hear from other schools on this.

Just wanted to check with you whether this would be a good strategy: Applying now with my present score and if I attempt the GMAT again, sending in a new score later on in the admissions cycle?

2. Is there anything you'd suggest that I could do that'd boost my profile some more (such as more volunteer work etc.)?

3. The present gap in employment: Should I mention something about it in my resume or save it for the optional essay to explain the situation?

Again, thank you Jon for taking out the time to review this. It's been a great help.

Hey,
Sooo, really it's hard to say what the right path to take is here because there are also so many personal things involved. Of course, it would be better for you to apply with a higher GMAT. But then again, I don't see how that + applications will happen before the end of R2. So something has to give somewhere.
Some schools will let you send in the GMAT for consideration after the deadline, but don't count on this. and it also doesn't buy you thaaaat much time. (I'd say if you take this path, the GMAT should be done within 3 weeks of the application deadline).

As for boosting your profile, honestly, at mid-October the one two things you should be concentrating on are: 1. applications 2. GMAT.

And as for your present gap in employment, absolutely you should write about it, and also about why...

Best,
Jon

Thank you Jon. This is hugely helpful. I'm focusing on the applications and research presently and will update this thread when I have any updates on my application/admission.

Again, thank you for your advice. It clarified a lot of things.
