Hello everyone!
I just took the GMAT and scored a 670. Do you guys think it is enough for schools such as Columbia and Cornell?
I'm a candidate from Brazil and have a poor GPA of 2.7, which I think is not comparable with american gpa's since almost nobody in my school graduated with gpa's of 3.5 or higher.
Does the ADCOM compares GPA's from different countries?
Work experience:
I have 4 years of work experience, the last 3 of them working for one of the biggest banks in Latin America (Itau).
Currently I'm working on budget forecast and financial analysis, reporting directly to the CFO.
I got promoted 2 times and I'm considered a good potencial for the bank in the future. If I got admited the bank will sponsor my tuition and living costs.
Do you guys think sponsored students have higher chances of getting admited? just wondering...
I'm also a former basketball player in Brazil and currently run half marathons. I speak Portuguese (native), English and Spanish.
I also did volunteer activities, helped people starting their carrier in finance teaching them the basics of finance and so on...
Do I have a chance or I should retake the GMAT?

Hi Tiago,
Your GPA most probably will not be 2.7! Use the IGPA services from wes (https://www.wes.org/) to calculate your actual GPA on a 4.0 scale. Many Ad-Coms use wes in their admissions process, so you'll get a good idea of how they will see your undergrad.
Coming to your GMAT, 670 is not a sure shot for Cornell and CBS. It's lesser than their median GMAT scores. If you apply now (R3 and R2) with this score, your chances will be slim. However if you apply for the next year in R1, you'll have much better chances even with the same score.
Since you are stellar in other areas like sports and working in banking, my advice would be to go ahead and apply for R1-2017, you will have better than average chances. You can spend the time bolstering your application with community leadership activities and working towards another promotion in your bank (if that's possible), and working on your story and essays from now itself (giving you a huge head start). But don't fixate on Cornell and CBS.. apply to at least 3 other schools.
That being said, if you are 100% sure that you can improve you GMAT to above 700, you can try again.. but you'll still end up applying for R1-2017... Your call buddy!

One misnomer I would say is not explicitly true is that applying R1 is much better than applying in R2: on a percentage basis, the admission rates are the same but the competitiveness of the pool could be different in that R1 has your over-eager applicants who have all their materials together while R2 applicants are a bit less firmed up.
I would suggest you spend time in getting that GMAT score up, even if it means you'll apply in R2.
