Hi All, This is my first post in GMATClub. I have been silently following the forums for around 6 months now and it has been really a great help. I will write my GMAT, TOEFL and MBA Application experience in detail once I finalize the school I am matriculating from and start loan and visa processing.
Currently, I am in a bit of dilemma after the results of my R1 applications and any advice from persons with relevant knowledge will help me finalize my decision.
My profile – Indian, 34 years old, 11 years of experience in IT Product Development and Services, Currently working as a Project Manager managing a 30 member team for an Indian IT giant, GMAT – 760, TOEFL – 112, have around 4 years of international experience working in UK, want to be in IT Product Management or IT Program Management or Technology Consulting after MBA preferably outside India.
My main choices after R1 is Said Oxford without scholarship and Boston University (Questrom) MS-MBA in Information System with Full scholarship and an extra $10K scholarship. Without the scholarship at BU, Oxford wins hands down. However, I am trying to compare these two only because of the scholarship as Said will mean an extra $80K debt for me.
The pros for Said are –
Oxford Brand,
1 year only so opportunity cost will be around the same as BU.
The cons for Said are –
Getting a job in UK will be very difficult as an Indian due to the current visa rules,
with the amount of debt a job in India will be the last option I would take.
The pros for BU are –
The MS-MBA in Information System program is aligned to my goal,
Minimal debt due to scholarship and I can even think of coming back to India for a job,
Opens an opportunity in US with the location of Boston.
The cons for BU are –
Almost no brand value, overshadowed in Boston by heavy-weights such as Harvard, MIT,
Getting a job in US will still be difficult with my experience and with only the brand of BU,
Even if I come back to India it will be difficult to find a suitable job with only the BU brand which is not that recognized in India.
Even with the uncertain situation of UK Visa and jobs, I am inclined towards Oxford due to the brand value as it will probably compensate the short term hurdles in the longer term. I might consider BU only if someone can provide me a very strong reason. Looking forward to your advices.
