Hey everyone its decision time!
I am torn whether I should join the HEC or Cambridge Judge MBA program. I am incredibly grateful to have been accepted to these two amazing schools, but I must make the best possible decision. This forum has been very helpful for me and I would like to listen to anyone's opinion.
I am international (emerging market) candidate with previous work experience in hedge funds and corporate business development. Post MBA I would prefer to work in the UK as I am not keen on learning a new language and London´s status as a major financial center (regardless of Brexit). However, I am willing to go any country in the EU post MBA, depending on the opportunity.
Industry wise I would prefer to transition into private equity (I have good work experience, but I don´t have IB WE.) or tech (e-commerce). I am able to work in the EU without company sponsorship.
Preliminary Conclusions
I am leaning towards Cambridge due to its location and globally recognized brand. My main concerns lie on the job opportunities after the MBA (most important factor). I am concerned due to the Judge MBA program structure, which might limit internship opportunities. From what I have perceived, HEC seems to be a "safer" choice due to better job opportunities, particularly in Finance. I understand networking is an essential component, but it makes it far easier to have companies come to you.

- Located in my preferred post MBA destination, which would translate to more networking opportunities in London.
It being 2020, I would be able to apply for a pre-settled status, eliminating some uncertainty for work opportunities in the UK.
Globally recognized brand. This would be helpful, particularly if I go back to my home country (widely known school).
- Internship period does not align with large company internship programs. I heard these companies are willing to make exceptions, but I am unsure if this is actually the case.
Rankings are lower than HEC and other top EU schools.
I have heard from current students that MBA graduates that Finance opportunities are not as widely available (besides networking for them).
HEC
Pros
- Higher MBA ranking.
From speaking to various MBA students in several schools, I have heard HEC has a great career services team and that there are more "work opportunities/offers", particularly in consulting and finance.
Program is structured to better allow for internships placements (which could translate to a full-time job).
Cons
- Located in France (I do not know any French, prefer not to learn other than the basics).
Uncertainty regarding Brexit (not being able to apply to pre-settled status).
HEC is not widely known outside the EU.

Sorry it's been a very busy weekend with 20+ topics so I am slowly going through them
You have great work experience and seem to be a very strong candidate. Your career goals are pretty specific but potentially challenging to recruit for. Pivoting/changing/shifting, especially into PE. I don't think they recruit on campus anywhere really and all opportunities would be networked. I can't see them coming to Judge and bypassing Said or LBS. So the question comes to - will you be able to network better being at Cambridge in the UK or with the help of a summer internship from Paris? It is Internship vs. Location
My perspective is that you want to go to school in the country where you intend to work. I break this rule sometimes for schools such as INSEAD, LBS, HBS, MIT, etc. but in general it stands. With Judge being in the UK, it will be a lot smoother to settle and ease into a job than from France/EU for example. However, the fact that you can work in EU definitely helps and is a consideration.
There are still a number of variables and unknowns but you can reduce them somewhat - you can do some networking research early and spend a few days on LinkedIN researching PE companies in London/EU and see if you can have any access via the HEC or Cambridge network. See if you are seeing patterns. This should not take long to come up with a list of companies and then search their staff via LinkedIn.
Second, I would also contact AdCom or student ambassadors at Judge/HEC and connect with someone with similar goals and ask them about life. Obviously it is a hard time with Corona but ask them for advice. What would they do in your shoes with EU work permit but no language skills? Ask the same question to both and connect with them. It will be helpful as you may be able to sublease your apartment from them or get some free household items as they move on with their lives. it is good to be in touch with the students and know what's going on in the program.
Third, you can consider learning French. You will be surprised how far you can get in 4 months. It is a consideration....

However, I don't see UK employers taking the train and going to Paris to look for internship or management talent especially in PE. I also think with Coronavirus, a 2-year program with an internship is safer and allows to wait it out and plan better.
P.S. You seem to be realistic with yourself and understand that while Cambridge has a good global name, you will be competing with Said and LBS students for Jobs, in particular with LBS in London where it is the strongest.
