About me:
Originally I thought I wanted to work in consulting for the social sector, but now I’m not so sure. For background, I spent the first three years of my career as a teacher and a TFA like program, and have spent the last four at Zillow in strategy. I love love love my job. But I originally majored in creative writing in undergrad and often feel like I’m missing background knowledge. I think an MBA will help me fill in some of the gaps, and make me more valuable to my future team. I also want to use this opportunity to move back to the East Coast where I can be closer to friends and family.
I am currently interested in a broad range of concentrations such as: strategy, real estate, operations development/process improvement, social sector, tech, diversity and inclusion. I think my ideal job would be at a start up where I could wear many hats and see the progress of projects I’ve taken on. Or working on a Pilot project for an established company.
After graduation I hope to stay in the southeast, preferably Charlotte, the Triangle (Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill), or Atlanta.
While Duke has a greater global appeal, I am not sure there is much regional difference between the two in terms of network and reputation. Although I was more impressed with Duke’s overall culture and felt like it was a better fit, I am not sure there’s much difference in the quality of education I would receive from Kenan Flagler versus Fuqua. The idea of getting a top 25 MBA for under 20 K in debt is very appealing to me. I also have a strong support network in the area so I don’t necessarily have to rely on my classmates as much. I am an older applicant and I’m pretty introverted. I’m not much for Fratty culture, which I imagine would be at both.
I am the opposite of a ranking snob. I have already turned down Darden, and Tuck with no regrets. For future companies, I plan to prioritize culture over pay, and emphasize work/life balance, which I do feel like Duke might have a slight edge over in terms of career resources.
For someone with my goals and with my background, how much more valuable is a degree from Fuqua vs KF?
