Hi all,
I have been offered a scholarship and fellowship to Yale SOM ($50k total) and a scholarship but no fellowship to Oxford SBS ($27k total). I have already written to Oxford requesting a match and they were not able to do better than the $27k offer. I am emotionally super attached to Oxford but realize practically Yale is probably the choice I should make. So I need some weigh-in!
About me:Background: I have a B.A. in international affairs and 8 years of experience in international development, managing projects and teams in Asia, Africa and Latin America. I manage human rights projects in partnership with for-profit companies (e.g. child labor prevention in agricultural supply chains)
Financials: In addition to the above info about scholarships, worth noting I already paid a deposit to Oxford of $12k. It's still net cheaper to go to Yale (unless you factor in the extra year off work).
Career Plans: Looking to transition to sustainable business practices, especially interested in sustainable and ethical food systems.
Personal: I am married and my spouse will try to come with me to either location but that's not guaranteed. If Yale, he would probably either stay in our current home in DC and go back and forth, or look for work in NYC. Would likely do his current job from Oxford for the year.
Yale SOMPros:
- More affordable than Oxford
- Longer program means more time for electives
- Longer program also means a summer internship for employment exposure
- Electives across the university mean I can take classes with the school of environment and expand more on sustainability
- Fellowship is prestigious and offers another network
- Higher ranking / stronger brand for future employment?
- Strong emphasis on business for society
- Possibly higher earning potential out of school?
Cons:
- Two years is a longer period to be out of work, and also a longer period for my life. I'm turning 30 this summer and feel that clock ticking!
- New Haven frankly sounds depressing.
- Less connected to European job market?
- Opportunity cost of NOT going to Oxford in terms of experience. I've dreamed of Oxford for years and never envisioned myself at Yale.
- Possibility of being long distance with my spouse for 2 years
Oxford SBSPros:
- The Oxford experience, the school I've been dreaming of for years, etc. Living in Oxford sounds incredible.
- The school is very focused on social impact
- One year means less time out of work, graduating younger
- Stronger brand for European employment?
Cons:
- More expensive overall
- Weaker brand overall for employment? Lower ranked.
- Does the one year MBA signify a less rigorous education, both in reality and in the eyes of future employers?
- Weaker support structure. Yale's outreach and response time has been far better than Oxford at the admissions stage.
- They weren't able to offer the fellowship, so I'm missing out on that.
Thanks for the input.
