Congrats on the admits.
Considering the given market and hiring trends I have seen for the 1st year internship recruiting this year I would say you might be better off applying again next year. Even if you get the same admits - just by virtue of the economy improving, you will have better recruiting outcomes.
I feel a top 10 MBA would give you a much better chance at breaking into consulting, especially in an economy that is slowing down and offers are being delayed. However, I would urge you to look beyond the MBBs - there are a lot of other good consulting firms and corporate strategy roles that you should also consider.
Talking specifically about Tepper, consulting recruiting has been pretty average. Some firms didn't hire at all while others hired 5-6 people but the overall number has been lower than that in previous years.
If I was in your place, I would apply again next year - might help me get a better school and also ride out the economic downturn currently.

I am really happy to be admitted to these schools. My background is engineering, and I am looking for a career switch to Consulting.
Hello Azoozasw39,
Do you have any scholarships from these schools? Is cost a deciding factor for you? What other factors (location, brand value, etc) are you looking at when deciding which school to choose?

Thank you so much for your feedback and I’m sorry about a tough year.

While I feel there are some anecdotal stories about MIT Sloan having a connection with BCG because they are based in Boston and other anecdotal comments, I who’ve heard that a lot of schools had weak consulting recruiting and as you have seen many have even deferred people start dates by six months.

PS. If you don’t mind me pushing the topic a little bit, what do you feel or what are you hearing is better in higher rank schools? Bigger quota of people taken in every year? Kind of like a chicken and the egg where they take 50 people per year and they keep doing that?

Hey BB
Both internship and full-time recruiting has been slow for all schools in general this year.
However, one thing that stands out from a higher ranked or even bigger school (from class size) point of view is the larger alumni base in the firms across the US. So for Tepper for instance the alumni base is mostly concentrated in Pittsburgh and it's difficult to get traction in other offices whereas for a Wharton/ MIT/Columbia, there will be a high concentration of alumni in most major cities.
Also, the usual pipeline is much bigger for the top 10 schools as you mentioned so even in a bad year if that number comes down from 50 to 25 it still gives better odds than a lower-ranked school where the number drops from say 20 to 10.
But then again the tradeoff is between having a larger, well-spread-out alumni base versus a more involved and enriching experience at a school like Tepper/UNC/Mendoza that has a smaller class size.

Thanks so much for details and a quick reply 🙏

I think another factors if a firm is recruiting from Columbia or Wharton that has six or 800 students, that still means chances are really bad even if they take 25 or 50.

All of the students are buttoned up and very capable see your competition is a lot stiffer but I think the part about how I’m not at work is a good point. Also the more exclusive the school, usually the more supportive the network is.
