Hi,

I am Indian male with 9 years of work experience in Manufacturing & Operations in FMCG sector. Have done undergraduation at IIT Madras.

I got admits from both IESE (Sep-24 intake with a scholarship) & HEC (Jan-25 intake, pending scholarship decision).

My requirements:
1. My post-MBA goal is to remain in industry through Leadership Development Programmes (LDP) leveraging on my past work experience preferably in Consumer goods or Pharma sector but open to other sectors as well.
2. But given the limited no. of opportunities for LDP, I also plan to work on Consulting as backup during course. I have worked with consultants before as a client and thus have execution experience. But I want to do internship to see if it fits for me.
3. I would like to work in Europe or Middle East for 5-6 years.

I have spoken to alumni of both schools, and they are recommending their respective schools.I understood below from them

IESE
1. Very good for consulting because of case method approach
2. Academically very rigourous with attendance requirements
3. Sufficient break after 1st Year to do a 8 to 12 week internship

HEC
1. Very good for Finance courses and French network
2. In-campus accommodation taking away one thing to worry about
3. Only 8 weeks internship is possible after- 1st Year but very flexible programme, can adjust courses to do internship in Term-4.

Kindly share your views and also any other points I need to evaluate/consider.

Thank You!
Kolla_Chandra - thanks for your message, and congrats on the admits. Sharing some thoughts below (this excludes scholarship considerations, which should also be a factor):

1. Both schools have a strong Middle-East consulting network: IESE is arguably a bit stronger. For LDP, when I was at HEC (~4-5 years back), J&J, Nissan and some other firms used to recruit for leadership rotational programs. I believe they still do have a good presence across sectors (refer to latest employment stats). I'm not sure about LDP opportunities at IESE, but they report 20% of candidates landing roles in "Diversified Industries".

2. I would say HEC's network and brand within Europe (read English friendly pockets like Amsterdam, Luxembourg etc. where tech companies recruit for Management/ PM roles) are stronger than IESE, mainly due to the school's history and broader (Master's/ MiM) network. Being in France, the retail/ luxury sectors network is strong as well. If you're very keen on Middle-East, IESE is probably a better choice, but if you want to keep the optionality between Europe and Middle East, HEC is better in my view.

3. HEC's Jan batch gives you the optionality to do a longer (6-month) internship. This can particularly help land management roles in Europe as European firms prefer testing the waters thro' an internship before hiring full-time. IESE also gives you the flexibility to complete the program in 19 months, whereby you can intern. This point is a tie.

4. As an experienced candidate (or even otherwise), it's crucial to prepare well for the consulting recruitment process, and network well. Consulting firms usually tend to prefer younger chaps, and you may have to "compromise" on seniority (though consulting pays well) compared to industry roles if you're particular on consulting. However, this is a broader point, irrespective of which school you pick.

Hope this helps a bit. All the best!

Regards,
Arvind

I’m a big advocate of IESE Because it allows older adults to do an internship in the middle of the course not at the end of the course. So if you find like frankly most people do that what you've chosen for the internship is not a fit you have a choice to re recruit for the rest of the term. And that kind of salvages the value of the MBA. Unless you're a francophone I'm not seeing the value of the French network as much. For IESE They have connections to a lot of countries that allow you to work there even if you don't speak the language such as Germany or Netherlands. In France don’t try to work there if you don’t speak fluently. There's also a bit more versatility in the recruitment at IESE beyond consulting.
