SOLUTION

When 1/10 percent of 5,000 is subtracted from 1/10 of 5,000, the difference is

(A) 0
(B) 50
(C) 450
(D) 495
(E) 500

1/10 of 5,000 is 500;
1/10 percent of 5,000 is 100 times smaller than the above, so it's 5;

Thus the difference is 500-5=495.

Answer: D.

x/5000 = 1/1000

x=5

1/10 0f 5000 -- 500

then 500-5 =495... understood completely after getting the answer wrongly :cry:

Quote:
1/10 percent of 5,000 is subtracted from 1/10 of 5,000

=> 1/10 of 5000 - 1/10 percent of 5000
=> 500 - 1/1000*5000
=> 500 - 5
=> 495

Answer will be (D)

X subtracted from Y means -

Y - X

5,000 * 1/10* 100 = 5,000/1,000 = 5
5000 * 1/10 = 500

500 - 5 = 495. Ans - D.

(A) 0
(B) 50
(C) 450
(D) 495
(E) 500

We know that 10% of 5,000 = 500
So, 1% of 5,000 = 50
Which means 0.1% (aka 1/10 percent) of 5,000 = 5

1/10 of 5,000 = (1/10)(5000) = 5000/10 = 500

When we subtract 5 from 500, we get 495

I think this can be done mentally without pen and paper.
1. The first thing to look out for is the wording - there are chances you might miss out the % with 1/10 and end up getting the wrong answer.
2. The question says 1/10% of 5000 (X) is subtracted from 1/10*5000 (Y). This just simply means that Y-X. Anytime you are confused with such wording just associate a variable and it becomes easier to understand what is happening.

For part y - 1/10 of 5000 = 500 and
For part x - We have already calculated that 1/10 of 500 = 500. Now all we need to do is divide 500/100 to factor in the % and we get 5.
Upon subtraction = 500-5 = 495.
Hence, IMO D

500-5 =495
