Hi.. I'm prepping for SC at the moment and read this in a leading business journal, and want to know whether such a representation is correct:

"The board did debate on it and were not pleased with it".

I would have thought that it's wrong and that you could much rather say:

"The board debated over it and was not pleased with it".

I think here debate is used as a noun so "debate on" is correct.

But here debate is used as a verb and so "debated over" is the correct idiom.

One more mistake which i can see is the agreement in numbers,
It should be was not pleased instead of were not pleased, as board is a singular entity

this sentence is trying to say that "i assure you, the board did debate and was not pleased"

"The board debated over it and was not pleased with it".
this sentence simply says that the board debated over the topic.

Yes that's the best way to explain it! The word did helps to give more weight/support to the argument.

"I tried it" vs "I did try it"

I'm a bit confused. In the quoted piece above, doesn't stmt 2 also say the board wasn't pleased with after they debated over/on?

Can you explain further how did debate makes a big difference?

Also this quote is exactly the other reason why I had this question. I figured debated over is idiomatic.

Hey,

Let me try :)

First sentence gives you an assurance that the board debated over the topic
Where second sentence simply tells you about it, without any assurance ...

Makes sense?

Yes.. That finally makes sense! Basically "did debate" is a means of emphasis.. I somehow couldn't see that until you explained it this way.
