B. an even larger amount of people - larger implies that the people are large

C. an amount of people even greater - amount is wrong. Sentence structure is not in line with "than attended the last one."

Does anyone have insight about why "number" is a better option than "amount" in this sentence? I feel that E is the correct answer; however, this is only based on the way it sounds. It is unclear to me in terms of clear proof about why E is a better choice. Any insight would be appreciated! Thank you!

So, the split is between amount and number. Amount is used for uncountable nouns Such as water, oil, etc. The number is used for countable nouns: liters of water, tablespoon of oil, etc

People attending a concert can definitely be counted ; So A, B and C go out of the window


Between D and E: the trick is the presence of "than" in non-underlined part. It suggests that the underlined part must have a comparison going on. Option E shows that (albeit in a very subtle way - an even greater number... Hence option is E
