Does anyone have insight about why "number" is a better option than "amount" in this sentence? I feel that E is the correct answer; however, this is only based on the way it sounds. It is unclear to me in terms of clear proof about why E is a better choice. Any insight would be appreciated! Thank you!

The concert this weekend promises to attract an even greater amount of people than attended the last one.

A. an even greater amount of people

B. an even larger amount of people

C. an amount of people even greater

D. a number of people even larger

E. an even greater number of people

The concert this weekend promises to attract an even greater amount of people than attended the last one.

So, the split is between amount and number. Amount is used for uncountable nouns Such as water, oil, etc. The number is used for countable nouns: liters of water, tablespoon of oil, etc

People attending a concert can definitely be counted ; So A, B and C go out of the window

Between D and E: the trick is the presence of "than" in non-underlined part. It suggests that the underlined part must have a comparison going on. Option E shows that (albeit in a very subtle way - an even greater number... Hence option is E

KAPLAN OFFICIAL EXPLANATION:

E

Scanning the answer choices, note that 3 choices contain the word amount and 2 contain number. Because people can be counted, they come in numbers-not amounts. So (A), (B), and (C) are out. And (D)'s a number of people even larger could be referring to bigger people. (E) is best: "...to attract an even greater number of people" clearly refers to more people.
