explanation:
when we say cancer was detected--- it can mean cancer was detected in any part of the world therefore we must be specific with the fact that Sandra's cancer was detected!
had in sentence is the past tense of "have" and not the past perfect tense "had+be form of verb"- extra info
therefore option D is correct!

We need proper sentence to make sense. Who had cancer? Sandra had cancer and therefore some other person was chosen as a result.
Other choices do not relate first and second part of the sentences properly.
