For each of 13 adult nesting birds observed over a 24-hour period, the chart records the number of times the bird left the nest from sunrise to sunset and the number of times the bird left the nest from sunset to sunrise. The chart also shows the trendline for the data.
On the basis of the information provided, select from each of the drop-down menus the option that creates the most accurate statement.
The chart shows correlation between the number of times an adult nesting bird leaves the nest from sunrise to sunset and the number of times that bird leaves the nest from sunset to sunrise.
During this 24-hour observation period, the maximum number of times any of the adult birds left the nest was times.
Q2 answer: Each dot represents a bird and corresponding x axis number represents times it left the nest during night and corresponding y axis represents number of times left the nest during day time. A 24 hr period includes both day and night time. So, We need to simply take the sum of x axis and y axis number for each dot and the one with maximum is the answer Two dot with heighest total are 9+3=12 and 5+7=12. So, Maximum number of time a bird left its nest is 12.
Can someone explain how they got 12 for the second blank?

24-hour period means both from sunrise to sunset and then sunset to sunrise, therefore a dot who's both corresponding values (x and y axis) add up to the maximum is the correct answer.
my approach was that I checked the different options in dropdown and then tried to create sum of 12 from two number such as 9 and 3 and I could see one datapoint

How is everyone confused with 12 but not the negative part
Show more
It’s negative because, as the number of times a bird leaves the nest at night increases, the number of times it leaves the nest during the day generally decreases.
You can see this from the trendline: it slopes downward from left to right. That slope means the two variables move in opposite directions, more nighttime activity is associated with less daytime activity. This opposite movement is what defines a negative correlation.
