Is x an odd integer?

Question

(1) x is the square root of an integer.
(2) x is the square of an integer.

(a) is not sufficient. if x is odd say 5 it is a square root of 25

(b) squares are either even or odd (25 , 16) hence not sufficient

combining both if x is 9 then it follows both the scenarios and if x is 16 then also it follows both the scenarios...hence the answer would be E

Statement 1 is not sufficient as it tells only about square root of an integer. The integer can be odd or even so as per this statement we have following examples, 0,1,2,3,4,5 etc.

Statement 2 is not sufficient as it tells only about square of an integer. The integer can be odd or even like 0,1,4,9,16,25, etc.

Even if we combine, we have to find an integer which is both square and square root of an integer so we have integers like 0,1, 4, 9, etc. This also does not tell us about integer being even or odd. So Insufficient.

The correct answer should be option E.

Statement 1. Square root of an integer might or might not be an integer. We don't know if even x is an integer or not. So  Insufficient .

Statement 2. Square of an odd integer is odd, and square of an even integer is even. So x could be even or odd, we don't know. So  Insufficient .

Combining the two statements: x is both square root of an integer and square of an integer. But x could still be an odd integer (eg 9) or an even integer (eg 4). So  Insufficient .

Hence  E answer

x can be 9 which satisfies both the statements or x can be 16 which satisfies both the statements. Hence E.
