Hi everyone,
I took the GMAT about 2 months ago, and studied for about 3 months. I recall regularly practicing (about 1 hour a day) and would say in total I prepped about 75 hours.
I took a mock test without any preparations and got 660 or 680 (don't know anymore) so I definitely was aiming for a 700+ score. Especially given my low gpa (2.8 B.Sc, 2.35 M.Sc.).
If I can give a useful tip:
SAVE THE GMATPREP's and don't waste them in the beginning (like I did). The material I used was the offical GMAT 2013 review and
I basically did all the exercises 3 times. That's it. Just do the exercises back and forth 3 times, until you
get every detail right. Make sure that you thoroughly understand everything (especially on the verbal part!). It is of much more importance that you understand what they expect from you instead of just doing 1000 different exercises without understanding any.
my prep tests all ranged 660-730 ( but I did them in the very beginning so that's really stupid). I was afraid of not getting a 700+ score since at the time I was ready, there were no tests left. I guess I don't have enough patience
Test day prepI scheduled the exam on 14h00 on a Friday afternoon. I got up 2 weeks at exactly the same time and didn't drink too much alcohol in that period (seriously this helps). Just get yourself enough rest and a good schedule. You have to perform at your best for 4 hours so better get enough sleep!
I did not exercise the AWA... Just read the examples in the book (very good essay, good essay, bad essay...) and copied as much as possible the 'very good essay'. I ended up scoring a 5.0 which is pretty mediocre but I was happy with it.
I did not exercise the IR. Not even during the mock tests. I guess if you train well on the quant and verbal part you should do fine (I got an 8).
Took a brake, ate some banana and drank some water.
then the quant part. There was no single difficult exercise (really just basic quant). I ended up scoring a 49 which was well below my expectations (I hoped to get 50+ there) but I guess I just was not paying enough attention. After that I felt pretty bad because I knew I did not perform well on the quant section. I ate another banana and was even thinking of going home or not accept my score (really! I felt bad).
Then verbal section, which actually went very well, no difficult exercises as far as I am concerned. I must say however that I put a lot more stress on this during my preparation ( I am an engineer so I was good at the quant without prepping.)
I then got my score and felt quite weird. It was completely opposite of my expectations (lower quant, higher verbal and higher overal score), but I am happy though!
cheers
