The best volunteer opportunities allow you make an impact while developing your interpersonal skills. These opportunities can add element to your profile if meaningful. If not, then they will not really move the needle for you

Anything with:
- Leadership
- Fundraising
- Entepeneurship
- Political resonance
- Major impact

is particularly strong, as well as any strong positions in very famous volunteer places (say Unicef, Greenpeace, Red Cross, political campaigns)...

I hope this helps,
Best,
JF

What kind of volunteer activities will help me give an edge while applying to b schools like Harvard, Wharton,Cornell?

The best activities for these or any school are really to just have an IMPACT somewhere doing something THAT MATTERS TO YOU! The "What" is not nearly as important as the Why (as in why did you pick this) and also What happened since you joined? So to pick the best volunteer activities, think about your career goals and how you might have your volunteer work align with your passion. For example, do you care about investing and education? Maybe start a stock picking club at a local high school? Teach financial literacy classes at a local non-profit. Then try to keep track of how effective you have been. Did you teach 100 students? Did any of them open a bank account and better understand their finances? Can you give a before and after test of their knowledge and say that 95% improved their "financial literacy" after taking your course? These are ways you can show impact from your activities- but don't do this just for B school applications- let this be something you care about! And then either way- for B school or just for interviewing for another job- this will be a positive thing on your resume!
