I have been waitlisted at Rice. I am planning on writing to them. I think I am quite close to making the cut.
But I am also waiting for decisions from some other schools because scholarship is my biggest concern at the moment.
Let's say I proactively display interest by writing to the AdCom, do they put you in the spot to pay the deposit or withdraw other applications?
On the other hand, if I wait for a couple of weeks before writing to them, will it come across as my lack of interest?

Informing adcom of your interest will likely not lead to an immediate acceptance, which is the only way you would be asked for a deposit. Even if that did happen (basically never does right after telling them of your interest), you would have time before making a decision to attend. Confirming your interest in the program is a good idea as long as you follow their specific waitlist guidelines.
