Ding... sometimes it just doesnt work out in your favor, no matter how hard you try.

Wharton now moves to my "I didnt want to go there anyway" list.

Damn this hurts.

i just got dinged.
i've been dinged by HBS, Booth, and Wharton. Really losing hope here.

What are they looking for?

My profile:
Wrk Exp: 4yrs
GMAT: 710 (q50 v36)
GPA: 3.17
Undergrad: Electrical Engineering
Extracurricular: Volunteering at hospital, cancer society committee, teaching engineering to elementary kids

Right now, I'm thinking I need to rewrite the GMAT, but I thought something >700 was a foot in the door.

Anyone going through similar frustrations?
Even the admits, have any ideas on how to improve the profile? or any other suggestions.

Thanks

Improve your profile by shooting for a school who accepts you for you. Continue doing what you enjoy. I am passionate about the things I do volunteer-wise and in my free time. I am not going to start some bogus charity that my heart isnt in just to impress these guys. Another year of working wouldnt be bad for you either, but 4 years is adequate. Not much you can do to sharpen up the profile.

I feel you tho.. 750 GMAT, 5 years WE in corp finance, 3.5 GPA in finance, volunteering - tutoring, volunteer vacations, recruiting at my old school.

Most frustrating, I definiately kicked butt on the essays. They were by far my best set, and I am usually pretty pessimistic about myself, but these were good. Who knows what Wharton is looking for. Holding me back was undergrad school is tier 2 or 3, corp finance role, and white male applicant. It is what is.

With all of the seemingly superstar profiles I've seen, I am surprised there haven't been more people invited to an interview. Perhaps those will go out later in the afternoon. Never know what they're doing at admissions, though sure wish I did.

Ding.

While I'm quite certain the year 2012 isn't the end of the world, it sure does its best to kick me in the particulars repeatedly.

Oh well. Dust yourself off and try again, as the song goes. And congratulations to all those who made it!

Ding here too – I think everyone should take a minute to appreciate the amount of talented people contributing to this forum that were not selected to proceed with the next step in the admissions process. I took the admissions director's kind words to heart when she wrote:

“The fact that you did not receive an invitation to interview in no way reflects your intellectual abilities, personal achievements, or potential for continued success.”

Here it is - Wharton receives a tremendous volume of high quality applications. This can lead the admissions process to be a bit of a crapshoot. Personally, I am not going to let this temporary disappointment discourage me. I am going to sit down, reflect on stories I chose to incorporate, and get to work on the next round of applications. Hopefully, I can use this “ding” as a source of motivation for new goals I set down the line.

Best of luck

Dinged...

28 yo HCM re-applicant 730GMAT, 3.0 GPA UG. Alternative transcript all As, with a CFA level 1 completed. 5 years of Work experience since MS in Biomedical engineering. Academics were the clear weakness in my profile.

Working in a Fortune 500 Medical device company in Corp. Development. After 2 years of Engineering/Regulatory/Clinical experience. Got the Recommendation letter from the General Manager of my $1B Division. Met with faculty, the program director and other students. and most of all, was a reapplicant. Felt i did as much as I possibly could since my last application, including a new role in my company - where all my colleagues are Post MBAs from HBS and Wharton.

Definitely upsetting. But oh well, LIFE GOES ON!

Dinged.

I was expecting this after the Booth decision last week.

Profile

GMAT: 720(Q 49, V 40)
WE: 7 years in commercial banking with the largest foreign bank in Pakistan. Team management experience of more than 3 years as floor and branch manager at the flagship branch of the bank. 4 promotions and few awards along the way. In the last one year, I have worked as a coach on a successful sales culture transformation project for the bank.
UG GPA: 82.7/100, top 3 engineering universities in Pakistan
Voluntary experience: Voluntary experience of almost 100 hours in each of the last 3 years

I worked with a consultant from a top admissions consultancy company on 6 schools. Wharton and Booth were two of them, still to hear from Tuck and Yale.

Maybe my commercial banking experience, undergrad from one a Pakistani university, 4 GMAT attempts (650, 640, 680, 720) are a turn off for the schools, who knows. It is certainly demotivating and heart breaking.

Good points in the posts just above, I also took Ankur's words to heart, and will admit there are definately many poeple more qualified then me.

It just stings at first, but I am sure things will work out for me and everyone else here. We are all driven, it was great to compete with the best of the best. I see it as a fail, but you have to fail sometimes in life or else you didn't try hard enough. I had the toughest time writing failure essays because I havent failed big in the past few years. That is a result of never reaching for anything greater. This time I reached for the top rung on the ladder with everything I had. I failed. Failure isnt so bad. I am glad I tried and put my best foot forward.

Best of luck to all of those interviewing. Kill the interview in the name of GMATClub.
