I have done 25+ free MBA profile reviews over the last two weeks. These are some common questions and things I have learned. P.S. It is just my opinion, don't hold me against it:
1) Sometimes people need belief more than a review: I understand that. I have been through it as well. Sometimes, what people are really looking for is someone to say, “Yes, you have a shot.” That belief matters
2) Can certifications cover for a weak GMAT? Certifications (such CFA, FRM, CPA) do signal academic rigour and definitely add value. However, on average they do not really compensate for a low GMAT/GRE score, especially if you are applying to top US business schools.
3) Will a gap hurt my chances? I have a different view on this than most people. Too many applicants focus too much on the gap and not enough on what they have done in all the other years. Yes, you need a credible justification for a gap. But I have seen people with gaps get into ISB, Ross, and even Wharton. What stood out was their profile apart from the gap. That is what really matters.
4) Good profiles do get rejected after interviews: The reasons are somewhat similar, for example the application (essays, resume, etc.) was weak. It is generally not a profile fit issue, it is an execution issue. It can be fixed.
5) A common issue in weak essays: they state the obvious: Many people write things that are already clear from the CV. Imagine saying that to an adcom that reads 4000+ applications every year. Your narrative need to be unique and authentic.
6) Is the Indian application cycle getting tougher this year due to uncertainty in the US? That is a fair argument. But even if it is true (and I am not sure), there is nothing you can do about it. Focus on what is in your control.
7) Should you work with a consultant? I think this post on Linkedln answers that well:
