Hello,
I was wondering what would I be categorized as?
I was born in Peru, and I am only a citizen of Peru. However, my parent are Japanese. I do consider myself a hispanic/latino. I spent a good portion of my life in Peru, speak Spanish to this day, and am very enriched within the culture. When I apply to schools, I check off the Hispanic/Latino box and then asian box for race.
Would I be in Latin American Category or the asian categroy when adcoms look at my profile?
Extra: I lived in Peru for the first 10 years of my life and then moved to the US.
Hey AlldayAnyday,
Interesting question. Yes, Asian would be correct for race, and for ethnicity it would be South American/US mix. For all intents and purposes, you'd likely be viewed more as a US applicant (since you attended middle and high school, and likely college) in the US but with a bit of nuance - your upbringing would serve to make your application more interesting, especially if you can still show a strong connection to the Peruvian culture.
Regards,
