What if You were Pro Gambler [#permalink] New post  13 Feb 2007, 13:36
If you were 24, and for the year after graduation you played poker. What do you put on your resume? If you don't put it, what do you say you did that year?

I think you put it on your resume and hope the adcoms have a sense of humor. If you lie and they find out, which they very well might, you're toast. I think you need to spin it as proof of your adventurous, nonconforming personality, talk about the intellectual challenge of learning to play the poker professionals' game. It would help if you won alot and if the rest of your resume was golden and fairly conservative, so they don't think you're some kind of Vegas type...

What most people don't realize about poker is that it's a game where you can consistently win over 50% given that you have skill, patience, math/statystics skills.

If you can explain that you did take a year off and in that year got better at poker and the skills that come with it and can use them to your advantage in your future career and in school I think you should be alright

cool..very interesting..

I can't speak for the Ad-com, but I would hope this wouldn't be seen as a negative..and in fact...be seen as a positive experience...especially given your age...you did this while, young, out of college....a perfect opportunity to be adventerous before you settle down in a professional setting.

I agree that it's a potential asset in helping you stand out from other applicants, but if playing poker is *all* you did during that year off, even if you learned a lot and won a lot, it will reflect badly on you. Just as a year spent climbing the corporate ladder should also have some extracurricular or community component, so too a year spent playing poker should have been accompanied by some other activities that will portray you as a more well-rounded, not-completely-self-absorbed individual.
