What is the Average (mean) of x, y, and z?
The average of x ,y, and z is (x + y + z)/3, so basically, to answer the question, we need to find the value of x + y + z.
1) X + Y = 5. Clearly insufficient.
2) Y + Z =7. Clearly insufficient.
(1)+(2) We have 2 distinct linear equations with 3 unknowns. We can neither solve for them nor get the value of x + y + z, without solving for individual unknowns. Not sufficient.
Answer: E.
