What is the value of y?

(1) $$(x^2 – xy + y^2)(x + y) = x^3$$

=> Formula : $$a^3 +b^3 = (a + b)(a^2 – ab + b^2)$$

$$(x^2 – xy + y^2)(x + y) = x^3$$ =>$$x^3+y^3=x^3$$ =>$$y^3 = 0$$ => $$y=0$$
sufficient

(2) $$x^2 – x – y – y^2 = 0$$

=> $$x^2 – x – y – y^2 = 0$$ => $$x^2 – y^2 = x+y$$ => $$(x + y)(x-y) = x+y$$ => $$x-y =1$$
=> $$y = x-1$$

S1 - Using the formula $$x^3+y^3$$=$$(x^2 – xy + y^2)(x + y)$$
We see that $$y^3$$=0 i.e. y=0

S2 - $$x^2 – x – y – y^2 = 0$$
$$x^2 – y^2 = x+y$$
$$(x+y)(x-y) = x+y$$
therefore x-y=1
y cannot be determined.
