When cleaning her house, Carlotta discovered an old box of candles and figurines, each of which is unique. She wants to display the items on a shelf. How many different ways can she place the items in a row on the shelf if she alternates between candles and figurines?

(1) If only the figurines were lined up, 40,320 different arrangements would be possible.
(2) Carlotta has one more candle than figurine.

How this question is even correct. Option 2 more candles than fig..
Suppose there are 12 candles and she selects 9 out of 12 and then arrange alternatively.
Bunuel please tell me where I am wrong.

Hi all,
Just looking at this question, the one thing that gets me is that it is not clear that all the figurines or all the candles will be put up on the shelf.
It is possible that she only has space for x number of either figurines or candles, so there can be multiple solutions for even figuring out the number of figurines from part I, no?
