Let the capacity of the tank be x.

Thus, 1/3*x + n = 7/9*x
n = 7/9*x - 1/3*x
n = 4/9*x
Thus, x = 9/4*n

The correct option is D.

Is this because when you multiply 9/4 * 4, the 4s cancel out and you're left with the standalone 9?
Bunuel

Say the capacity of the tank is 9 liters;

So, there are already 3 liters (1/3*9=3) of fuel and after adding n liters there are 7 liters (7/9*9=7) --> 3+n=7 --> n=4 --> capacity=9=n*9/4.

Or just plug n=4 in the answer choices to see which option yields 9, answer choice D fits: 9/4*4=9.

Answer: D.

Yes. The 4s cancel, leaving 9.
