Whereas the nostrils of old world monkeys always turn downwards and their tails are never prehensile, in new world monkeys nostrils face sideways and most species have tails that can grasp objects.

A. Whereas the nostrils of old world monkeys always turn downwards and their tails are never prehensile, in new world monkeys nostrils face sideways
Comparison error - nostrils to new world monkeys. Eliminate

B. Unlike old world monkeys, having nostrils that always turn downwards and tails that are never prehensile, the nostrils of new world monkeys face sidewards
Comparison error - old world monkeys to nostrils. Eliminate

C. Unlike old world monkeys, in whom nostrils always turn downwards and tails are never prehensile, new world monkeys have nostrils that face sideways
Comparison is correct, but there is error with relative pronoun 'whom' usage. We use whom at the beginning of a relative clause when specifying the person or group of people we are talking about or when giving more information about them. Whom applies only to humans and cannot be used to refer monkeys or any other animals. Eliminate

D. Unlike the downward-facing nostrils and non-prehensile tails of old world monkeys, in new world monkeys nostrils are sideward-facing
Comparison error - nostrils to new world monkeys. Eliminate

E. Whereas in old world monkeys nostrils always turn downwards and tails are never prehensile, in new world monkeys nostrils face sideways
The comparison is correct with no other grammar errors. So, the correct answer choice is E

A. Whereas the nostrils of old world monkeys always turn downwards and their tails are never prehensile, in new world monkeys nostrils face sideways -> nostrils are compared with monkeys. Incorrect.

B. Unlike old world monkeys, having nostrils that always turn downwards and tails that are never prehensile, the nostrils of new world monkeys face sidewards -> monkeys are compared with nostrils. Incorrect.

C. Unlike old world monkeys, in whom nostrils always turn downwards and tails are never prehensile, new world monkeys have nostrils that face sideways -> Comparison is correct. But, why do we say "nostrils that face sideways", we could have said "nostrils face sideways". Incorrect.

D. Unlike the downward-facing nostrils and non-prehensile tails of old world monkeys, in new world monkeys nostrils are sideward-facing -> Similar as A. Incorrect.

E. Whereas in old world monkeys nostrils always turn downwards and tails are never prehensile, in new world monkeys nostrils face sideways -> This is better. Let's keep it.

So, I think E. :)

=> Compare "the downward-facing nostrils and non-prehensile tails of old world monkeys" to "in new world monkeys nostrils " => not parallel.
=> OUT

E. Whereas in old world monkeys nostrils always turn downwards and tails are never prehensile, in new world monkeys nostrils face sideways
A. Whereas the nostrils of old world monkeys always turn downwards and their tails are never prehensile, in new world monkeys nostrils face sideways
we are trying to provide contrasting features between two types of monkeys. but here, the meaning is distorted because it compares the nostrils of old monkeys to the new world monkeys. The phrasing(...nostrils of old monkeys...in new world monkeys...) is incorrect as it doesn't put the comparison items in parallel without distortedg the intended meaning. Eliminate.

Quote:
B. Unlike old world monkeys, having nostrils that always turn downwards and tails that are never prehensile, the nostrils of new world monkeys face sidewards
old world monkeys compared to nostrils -> Incorrect. Also, the description of nostrils is not a non-essential information hence bringing it within commas doesn't make sense. Eliminate.

Quote:
C. Unlike old world monkeys, in whom nostrils always turn downwards and tails are never prehensile, new world monkeys have nostrils that face sideways
in whom" jumps out as odd to me. But again, more importantly, the essential information about the differences - nostrils and tails is kept within commas making it look like non-essential information. I can eliminate it now but will wait to see if other choices provide a better sentence. It's on a thin thread but let's keep it for now.

Quote:
D. Unlike the downward-facing nostrils and non-prehensile tails of old world monkeys, in new world monkeys nostrils are sideward-facing
Now, here nostrils take the center stage instead of the two types of monkeys. The meaning is also distorted and comparison is incorrect - nostrils compared to new world monkey. Eliminate.

Quote:
E. Whereas in old world monkeys nostrils always turn downwards and tails are never prehensile, in new world monkeys nostrils face sideways
This is the clearest sentence. Correct comparison and conveys the correct intended meaning. Far better than C. This is correct.

Ans. E.
