I became a "lucky" owner of an Apple iPod Touch yesterday. This is in preparation for our iPhone app.
I was actually excited to try it out and check the app store, having heard so much about it and seen so many apple commercials on TV. Well, the store is big and cool but it is full of junk apps. I spent a few hours yesterday weeding through all of that and eventually gave up. (Did not purchase any apps - just downloaded a few free ones of doubtful value).

I thought we could start a thread to list valuable/favorite Apple iPod Apps. Here is what I found so far:

Did you find any valuable ones?

The apps I use most frequently (don't quote me on which were free, since I"m going from memory):

- Facebook (free): Pretty good functionality, just about anything you can do on the actual website you can do through this. Slightly better than the Facebook for Blackberry app.
- NY Times (free): Easier than dealing with a physical paper on the train.
- Colloquy (paid): IRC client - so I can keep up with GMATclub chat on-the-go. Very easy to use and set up, even for someone not that technically savvy.
- Pandora (free?): Internet radio, pretty nice when I get sick of listening to the music on my iPhone. Does a pretty decent job of picking music I like.
- Kindle (free): Awesome. Saved myself $350. Much, much easier to read a book on your iPhone than I thought it would be. Just a lot more page turning. - Trapster (free): It's like the wikipedia of police speed traps. Links to GPS so it can tell you when you're coming up on a place where cops like to hide. _________________ VP Joined: 22 Oct 2006 Posts: 1438 Schools: Chicago Booth '11 Followers: 9 Kudos [?]: 192 [0], given: 12 Re: Which Apple iPhone Apps Do You Use? [#permalink] Show Tags 07 Apr 2009, 11:59 Facebook - I use this all the time Urbanspoon - I use this once and awhile, great to find new restaurants or to help pick something out for you to eat Yelp - if you are looking for a restaurant review, this app is golden Whitenoise - good app to help you fall asleep to. If you like to sleep to crickets or rain this is where to go. Tapdefense - strategy tower game - position different types of towers on the map to kill the characters walking across Cannon Game - you are a stationary cannon and your objective is to estimate the right angle and velocity to use to hit your targets Colloquy - IRC program - great for gmatclub chat FlightControl - just got this. It has me occupied for awhile. You are a flight control operator and planes cross your screen and you need to swipe a flight direction for each plane to land in correct airstrip. Gets hectic when there are 10 planes on screen, some traveling at different speeds, trying to avoid a collision. Backgrounds - access to tons of different types of iphone backgrounds. Fun apps to show your friends - Snaptell - take a picture of a book cover or CD etc and it will find that item, display the actual picture of whatever it is that you took and give you access to reviews etc WhattheFont - similiar to snaptell, but you take a picture of a font and it identifies the name of the font. Great idea, havent had much use or luck with this app. Shazam - this one identifies songs that you may hear during a commercial or at a club Manager Joined: 08 Mar 2009 Posts: 193 Followers: 1 Kudos [?]: 19 [0], given: 0 Re: Which Apple iPhone Apps Do You Use? Apparently you can use a Touch (or iPhone) with the Skype app to make free calls, provided you are near an open free Wi-Fi spot. I have been waiting for this capability for over a year....... I have no time to read web articles on my laptop like I used to. So I just click the "Read Later" button installed on my browser and this app takes care of the rest. It actually downloads the articles that you saved in text format. Therefore, you don't even have to connect to the web unless you want to sync to latest articles. _________________ Manager Joined: 21 Feb 2008 Posts: 87 Schools: UCLA Anderson '12 Followers: 4 Kudos [?]: 22 [0], given: 2 iPhone App to manage your MBA applications [#permalink] Show Tags 15 Oct 2009, 16:16 Just in case anyone's interested. My friend (a current MBA at Duke) published an iPhone application to help with MBA apps. It helps you manage application progress and retrieves application and school info for you on the fly. Pretty neat app I wanted to share and there's a free Lite version. http://www.applyaway.com/ Senior Manager Joined: 31 Aug 2009 Posts: 417 Location: Sydney, Australia Followers: 9 Kudos [?]: 295 [0], given: 20 Re: Which Apple iPhone Apps Do You Use? I ended up downloading GoodReader (cost$1.00) and it allows you to view PDF, MS Office and a whole load of other docs. It allows for wireless file transfer to the iphone as well.

Quite useful for loading those GMAT notes or whatever you're studying/reading at the moment. So far I've found it quite good, it loads large documents well and the usability it good. Also just downloaded the VeritasPrep software (free) so will give it a go and let you know how it goes.

My LG chocolate went wacko on my right before the new year and likely to my benefit. I intend to move to Alaska and would have issues with Verizon so I opted to switch to AT&T and get an iphone. It's just say that I'm all smiles these days. I've downloaded my free MGMAT flashcards, MathliteMagic for hints and tips, GMAT Club apps of course, and Doodle. I even used Doodle last night to get a friend's insight on a sample geometry problem. I'm going to put my phone to work!

The apps I use

b) bloomberg - free and really great coverage of fin and political news
c) nytimes
d) clearadmit (paid) though I think I'll try applyaway
e) imdb and flickster ( both free)
( imdb gives information about almost any movie made anywhere , anytime - cast, reviews, plot, awards. Flixter is good to share with friends. Both can be used to see showtimes in your area etc)
f) Word Warp & Moxie
g) pandora - you realise the possibilities of the genome project and it's free
h) shazam
there are others that I downloaded but these take the most of time.

Edited Jan 28, 2009
The good ones that I missed above
i) Stanza - Free for Free Books (A lot of context, old classics and modern)
j) Kindle for iphone - Free
k) Audiobooks - free (if you want to hear books. the only problem it streams but doesn't download so you need a 3G or wifi for it work. But having said that, thanks to the good people for all the good content.

Just realized we did not have this mentioned, but the 3 GMAT Club apps developed by Walker are quite useful for the MBA purposes:

1. GMAT Club (Tests) App

Includes 111 GMAT Club questions, Resource section with most useful links and ability to select which questions to work on based on topic or question type.
More details: gmat-club-apple-app-for-ipod-iphone-81492.html

2. GMAT ToolKit
Includes GMAT timer, error log for OG 12 and other OG guides, GMAT Club Math Book project, list of Idioms (soon to be fully redone), RSS feeds with GMAT and MBA news, and other functionality.
More details: gmat-toolkit-iphone-ipod-application-82830.html

3. MBA ToolKit

Beautiful App! Designed to be a perfect (inexpensive too) tool for an MBA applicant. Includes a massive collection of RSS feeds to follow the latest news from top 30 schools (you pick which news you get to read/see), detailed information on schools with stats and did I tell you it was beautiful? As always, this is just the first release, and we'll continue upgrading and updating with new functionality based on your suggestions.
