Wow, I am surprised act the void of volvo enthusiasts! Look into the S40 T-5. It dogs any BMW I have been in. I have owned an audi (great car), BMW (in my eyes over hyped for a less delivering auto maker) and Volvo. By far I have found myself most pleased with the Volvo. The T5 comes in all wheel drive and the interior package and styling leaves nothing to be desired. It also is very classy, yet sporty! Also, the handling is unequaled in its class. But if you are a brand whore, then go with the BMW. However, one test drive in the Turbo Charged S40 T5 you will change your mind.

So... just to be clear.

I have a 325xi now, 04, 18K miles. It was leased, which at the time - as self employed - made sense. Unfortunately, the payoff is substantial - $24K, and I'm just not that keen on blowing that kind of cash. I realize I could get a honda or something for $14 or $15K, or a new jetta for $17K, but I just can't find a car I like.

I test drove a two passats, a jetta, a RX330, a CRV, an accord, a murano, a cheapo jag, an old 9-5, an A4, a G35, and a bunch more I forget, and frankly, I hated them all in comparison, cept maybe the X3/A4 I tried out the other day. That's of course, not too surprising - I mean, were comparing cheaper cars to arguably one of the best sedan's every made. In the end, I know that I'd be unhappy with any other car by comparison, and in two years I'd just find myself trading it again - meaning more loss, more sales tax, etc. The BMW I buy now I keep, and I keep for a long time.

It's a tricky decision in some ways because $24K for a 04 325xi w/ 18K is actually a pretty good price. By comparison, if you look online, it would appear that xi's with 35,000 or so miles go for that price - or in some cases, even 40,000+. So on the one hand, it seems like I SHOULD buy out the car I have - even though its a bit more than I want to spend. On the other hand, if I can get a similar 02 model for $17K - and no sales tax - I save $7,000 (with sales tax more like $9K) and still, basically, have the same car that I've fallen in love with.

So what do you guys think? Keep the car I have (325xi, 04, 18K miles) for $24K or find something less $$ but with more miles? (For instance: 02 325xi 48K miles, $19K, or say a 325i 03, 28K miles for $18K). The thing is I can buy out the 17K car free and clear - I can't afford to buy out the $24K car free and clear. That extra $200 or $300 a month in my pocket would be nice.

The other element is whether or not I need the AWD. I have several friends who have a BMW (without AWD) and drive in Chicago without and they say they are fine. Obviously, on days where its really bad, AWD or not, its probably best not to go driving all over the place. (As it so happens, today is one of those days!) Truth be told, those days are relatively rare anyway. Most streets get cleaned quickly.

So, thats my dilemma. I've been spoiled by the BMW, and although I know I can get a cheapo Jetta for $12K or something, I just cant bring myself to spend $12 to $14K on a car I really dont like, so I just keep coming back to the whole BMW thing. The only real exception to that would be an A4, which dollar-for-dollar seems like a better deal maybe. I'm not a fan of the interior which I think just looks less polished than a BMW, but black with wood finish looks pretty similar.

For instance:

https://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/car/277687008.html

https://chicago.craigslist.org/nch/car/275688999.html

https://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/car/274332856.html

I would choose the A6 if the owner does not change the rear :p

The best remains the A4 quattro... excellent under any conditions (espacially the bad weather and snow u describe)... safe on roads and a car that responds... only my view after all :)

Well, its cheap, but the interior isn't half as nice a BMW or Audi. It reminds me of a nissan maxima.

With the wood finish it looks better:

https://images.cars.com/supersized/DMI/636/VR8811.11.jpg

But some versions seem really ugly: (not a T5 though)

That said, I do find the price appealing. $14K for an 04 w/ 30K miles. (mind you its not a T5).

Rhyme,
I am selling my 2004 RAV4. It is currently in St louis, so not sure if its practical for you. But its a good car, it has very low miles and I'm giving a pretty good deal on it. Have a look and let me know...

That last interior was in the old body style. Those pictures also do not do the interior justice. The car is more comfortable than your average BMW. I have traveled in the T5 to all the schools I had interviews with and can tell you it is very forgiving on long drives. However, a car is all preference, I would just really suggest test driving a T5 05' or newer before you make up your mind, the car is surprisingly affordable and can compete with its more expensive competitors.

It's off topic but, if you got one of these you'd be the talk of B-School (look at the Aero-X model):

Rhyme - are you looking for a real 4 seat (kids + reasons) or a 4 seat occassional?

A rabbit GTi is pretty great if you can find one, but... well, they are pretty small by your midwest standards.

Sat in one yesterday. I didnt mind the car, but I found the seats supremely uncomfortable. It felt horribly cramped.

Ok I wasn't totally fair. I did like the RX 330, but I wasn't a huge fan of the loose steering wheel. It just felt too loose - what I call the "old lady steering" where a pinky is enough to move the entire wheel at 60 mph. I couldn't "feel" the drive. Hard to describe. Otherwise, I liked the car. The only other thing was that when I hit the highway the car felt somewhat unstable during gusts of wind. You should test drive it though, it's a nice car..

Oh and price - it's not cheap.

I can relate to what you are saying...Very very easy to Steer and u can feel the WIND shaking the car etc.....but my wife just loves the design of RX 330...i doubt if lexus created this vehicle for woman...99% of the time i see a woman driving Rx 300

LOL. It's just very loose... I felt like I was steering a toy car. By comparison, my current car feels strong - I can feel the turn, and the grip of the car. The steering is responsive and feels dynamic. In the RX330, it just didn't.

The G35 04-06. The 07 interiors are awesome but definitely overpriced. I think the FX 35 is sweet too.
