People are trying to be helpful by waving you through, but I've noticed many times that this can accidents. The problem is that a friendly driver trying to be helpful might cause traffic to move unexpectedly. The friendly driver waves you through because he's letting you pass; but his gesture doesn't mean that others are thinking the same way.

Still the guy driving on the shoulder should be at fault (based on your great illustration). It sounds like you're OK, and the car is repairable so that's good. I got rear-ended 2 weeks ago while sitting in traffic. No visible damage to the car, but I still need to get checked out. Fortunately (I guess) it wasn't my car.

Agree with u.... We see the same sort of things here. :) What a contradiction... The kindness of one guy could be finally the worst to recieve.

Sorry for u again, rhyme.... and what a hurt ! I hope u have the repairs covered by your assurance !

The exact same thing almost happened to me last week, some guy driving in a non-lane almost smashed into me.

I totally agree about the "friendly driver" causing accidents. Sometimes it's totally necessary to wave people in, like if you're in bumper to bumper traffic and someone is trying to turn onto the street you're on. But when people unnecessarily wave people in complicated intersections it causes too much confusion.

A few months ago I saw this guy stop in the middle of the street because he saw some pedestrian standing on the side of the street (pedestrian was basically waiting to jaywalk when there was a break in traffic). So this guy stops to allow this person to jaywalk, and the guy behind him, expecting that no one would just randomly slam on their brakes in the middle of the street, smashes right into the back of the "friendly driver."

The thing about being a "friendly" drive is it makes people unpredictable, and the whole point of traffic rules is to keep things predictable.

Other than that I have no strong feelings.

Yep. Thats exactly what happened to me a few years back when I was visiting New Zealand. Fortunately it was not my car and I was covered.

I had a fender-bender 10 days back right when I was leaving for my INSEAD interview. At least it provided a nice ice-breaker topic for me and my interviewer :)
