Hi,
I just gave my Gmat yesterday, got a 700 (Q49,V37). I was pretty disappointed with my score as I had been getting ~730 in
MGMAT mocks, but I accepted the score anyway because R2 deadline is approaching and I wanted enough time for the applications.
Here is my profile in brief.
Total exp- 5.5 years
1. Tata Consultancy Services - Systems Engineer (2.4 years)
- Business Intelligence, ETL, Warehousing, Data extraction
2. Lawyered - Co-founder (2.5 years)
- Got acquired earlier this year by a Gurgaon (India) based startup accelerator.
- Experience in Business Analytics, Strategy and Marketing
3. India Accelerator - Consultant (6 Months)
- Consult startups on fundraising, go-to-market strategy and technology
Education- B.tech IT - SRM Chennai - 7.5 CGPA
I want to get into consulting/PE post MBA.
Could anyone help me figure out how I should go about making a list of colleges where I can apply.
Also, with this score and profile, what range of average GMAT score should I look at while shortlisting. For ex, UCLA at a 715 average GMAT is out of scope or worth a try?
I'm looking at Tepper, Duke, Darden, Ross, Mccombs etc
Hi Raghav,
Thanks for posting! Good job on the GMAT, I know it wasnt the score you were looking for but you've crossed the 700 mark with a strong Q score.
As you know, the pool of applicants from India is extremely competitive and GMAT scores for this group are going to range in the low to mid-700's. This simply means the other aspects of your application are going to need to stand out. When a school like UCLA reports its average GMAT, it's not an accurate representation of the score you or someone else would need in a more competitive subset and includes lower scores from candidates who bring other things to the table.
Overall, it looks like you have a solid profile, and Tata is a well-known firm. Your start-up experience is unique as well and shows an entreprenurial spirit. It's often hard to predict what someone's chances are in a competitive subset like yours, but I think you should have a couple schools in the 10-15 as targets/reach and a few in the 15-30 range as target/safety. Duke, Darden, and Ross are going to be tough, Tepper and McCombs more realistic as targets.
Stick with consulting, since the schools you list generally don't send people into PE (1-2 per year, but for those with previous investment banking/PE experience, and often into smaller middle-market offices).
If you'd like to speak more about your candidacy and are looking for assistance on your R2 apps, please let us know - or if you have any other questions about the process. We'd be happy to help!
