While at the beach, the weather was chilly, but when they got home, the temperature rose markedly.

(A) While at the beach, the weather was
'While at the beach' modifies 'the weather' which is illogical. How can 'the weather' be at the beach?

(B) While they were at the beach, the weather was
Correct. No illogical pronoun references.

(C) While at the beach, they had been
Incorrect use of tense. No need for past perfect since no action was done beforehand.

(D) While being at the beach, the weather was
Same reasoning as A.

(E) While at the beach, the weather had been
Same reasoning as A.
