Will low GPA affect my chances?

Question

Hi,

I have a GPA of around 1.5 when converted into the 1-4 point system. I know its very low and want to know if it can be compensated with a high GMAT score and excellent essays and SOPS when writing the application. I have 4 years of experience in consulting and will have around 5 years worth of experience by the time i join a school. Also, I am aiming for MBA in consulting itself.

Also, i don't have much extra curricular records to show but i do have an excellent work record and will be reflected in my recommendations. And i do have time to add some extra curricular activities to my resume.

I am aiming for the top 30-60 universities and I am also well aware of the fact that clearing the GMAT score is just one of the many criteria.

Few of the schools i am interested in are, not necessarily in the given order:

1. Kelly School of Business 
2. UT Austin, Texas 
3. Purdue 
4. Rotman School of Management 
5. Melbourne School of Business 
6. Indian School of Business

Considering all this, will it be really detrimental for me to have such low GPA?

A GPA that low would likely be a tough hole to climb out of from an admissions perspective, even with a good GPA. Schools want to see that you can dedicate yourself academically. Best thing for you would be to get a very good GMAT score and also go back and take some more classes and get A's. This would be the best demonstration of academic success.

Actually, i converted wrong. Its 2.7 not 1.5.
I have read several posts and know that 2.7 is also quiet low but at least better than 1.5. Can this be overshadowed by good GMAT score and other aspects of my application?

Yes! A 2.7, while not a plus in an application, would not be a deal killer like a 1.5 would be. The farther back the UG degree, the less it matters as well. Definitely a doable profile when a 2.7 is balanced with a strong GMAT.

GPA is the most forgivable of application attributes--it's difficult for schools to compare GPAs since curricula and grading vary so widely amongst undergrad programs. Also, the longer you are out of school, the more they will look at career trajectory vs. GPA as a guide. Finally, test scores can make up for low GPAs and there's also additional coursework to demonstrate aptitude.
