With just over a day having passed since Sir Alex Ferguson announced his decision to step down from the post of Manchester United manager after the current season concludes, the United board decided to appoint David Moyes as the new manager overlooking bookies favourite Jose Mourinho. The announcement for David Moyes’ appointment was made by none other than Alex Ferguson himself. He said: “When we discussed the candidates that we felt had the right attributes we unanimously agreed on David Moyes. David is a man of great integrity with a strong work ethic. ”
Mourinho would have been a natural replacement with a massive character to follow in Ferguson’s footsteps .Having won leagues in three different countries and having enjoyed Champions League success with Porto and Inter Milan, Mourinho looked like favourite to get the coveted role of managing Manchester united.
However Mourinho is himself to be blamed for this. Ferguson’s comments regarding “candidates” suggest Mourinho was discussed and rejected by United. His statement about “integrity” and “work ethic” shows the United board did not feel Mourinho possessed the integrity required to manage Manchester United. Otherwise they would have approached him.
Which of the following if true strengthens the above conclusion? A. Ferguson can hardly be described as brimming with values and integrity. He was as comfortable when publicly berating referees, lamenting the Football Association and banning journalists from the club as he was at lifting trophies.
B. Mourinho has been disliked by Manchaster united fans since he raced down the touchline in a long coat when his Porto side ousted United late on their way to snaring the Champions League in 2004.
C. Mourinho, the former Porto and Inter Milan boss favours a return to Stamford Bridge, where he enjoyed great success between 2004 and 2007.
D. Moyes is molded from the same material as Ferguson. He is an ardent believer in order, discipline loyalty and hard work. He knows where to draw the line, and is hardly found getting involved in controversies or arguments with other managers or players.
E. United legend and club director Bobby Charlton who is also an influential member of United board has previously criticised Mourinho's conduct, telling the Guardian that "a United manager wouldn't do that" when the self-styled 'special one' gouged the eye of Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova in 2011.

Given conclusion is "Mourinho is himself to be blamed for not being selected as the next manager for the Manchester United Football club. Ferguson’s comments regarding “candidates” suggest Mourinho was discussed and rejected by United. His statement about “integrity” and “work ethic” shows the United board did not feel Mourinho possessed the integrity required to manage Manchester United. Otherwise they would have approached him. "
Option A: Incorrect - This doesn't talk anything about Mourinho.
Option B: Incorrect - Though it is given that Mourinho is disliked by the fans, it is neither because of his integrity nor his work ethic.
Option C: Incorrect - It doesn't talk about his integrity and work ethic.
Option D: Incorrect - It highlights only the qualities in Moyes but not Mourinho
Option E: Correct - It talks about the infamous "eye gouging" incident which highlights the lack of integrity on Mourinho's part.
Analysis :- Author says, In the selection of Manchester United Manager 'Integrity' and 'Work ethics' were the key attributes. Author concludes that Mourinho himself to be blamed for his defeat.
This reveals that Mourinho was lacking the attributes that were essential for a person to be a Manchestor United Manager.
The Answer choice which reveals this fact would support the conclusion and would be correct.
A. Ferguson can hardly be described as brimming with values and integrity. He was as comfortable when publicly berating referees, lamenting the Football Association and banning journalists from the club as he was at lifting trophies. This choice says that Ferguson too was lacking the values required for a person to be a United Manager. So this way this choice is attempting to establish that the values 'integrity and ethics' are not required in the selection of Manager. However in doing so this choice refutes one of the premises. In CR we can not refute the premises and they are taken to be true. Hence this choice is not correct.
B. Mourinho has been disliked by Manchaster united fans since he raced down the touchline in a long coat when his Porto side ousted United late on their way to snaring the Champions League in 2004. We are concerned about whether mourinho was possessing 'integrity' and 'work ethic' This choice does not comment on this. So incorrect
C. Mourinho, the former Porto and Inter Milan boss favours a return to Stamford Bridge, where he enjoyed great success between 2004 and 2007. We are not concerned about mourinho's success. Incorrect
D. Moyes is molded from the same material as Ferguson. He is an ardent believer in order, discipline loyalty and hard work. He knows where to draw the line, and is hardly found getting involved in controversies or arguments with other managers or players. This choice states Moyes was possessing the attributes required for a person to be a Manchester Manager. However Here as well no discussion about mourinho. This is the choice we were looking for. One of the club Director criticized the mourinho's conduct saying that This behavior can not be of a United Manager. This clearly indicates that Mourinho was certainly not having the attributes that were essential for him to be a United Manager. Hence this choice is Correct.
Do we really get such long questions in GMAT? Is this really a 700+ question?
It took me 3:55 to choose right answer.
How to avoid this timing in real GMAT?
Such long CR questions are rare but you do get 1 or 2 such questions on GMAT. You can certainly improve your speed to around 2:30 for such a long passage. As per my experience longer CR questions are more likely to be easier then shorter ones. This is certainly not a 700+ question, more like 600-700.
Don't get discouraged by a long passage as the actual argument must be concentrated in a tiny portion of the passage and the rest of it sets up the premise.

How to avoid this timing in real GMAT?
Yes anyone please tell me too, are such long CR questions in GMAT usual or was this a very hard one? I am no native and it took me quite a while to understand (re-read etc). Thank you
No, you would absolutely never see a question like this on the GMAT. It's far too long, but the more significant issue is the language. It's very difficult to understand, and is full of informal clichéd phrases. It's nothing like the kind of writing you'll find on the test. So I'd suggest ignoring this question.
Afraid...but this is not a GMAT type question. "Gouging a eye" as its stated in Option E never correlates to integrity or work ethic. The answer is very loosely worded.
